Factory rest vs fresh firmware install

I haven't done a factory reset since I've owned my note and of course there have been security patches plus the update to oreo along the way. If I have time at the weekend I thought I might do a factory rest and start from scratch, just for the fun of it!

Does doing a factory reset have the same effect as installing the firmware from scratch? Or, given that the firmware on my phone has had a number of updates along the way, would the cleanest method be to get hold of the full firmware and to install that? Can that be done through samsung software or would I use odin and sammobile?

My phone runs fine but battery life isn't great and I wonder whether a factory rest might help that out

A FDR would be the way to go. That way you'll be sure you have what your carrier has pushed out. With a firmware flash through software you run the risk of possibly bricking your phone if you install the wrong version. Or a slew of other issues that can happen.
