I tried the Motochopper method for my Sprint Galaxy S 4, and when the run process was doing it's thing it said it failed. I have the super user app on my phone now, but the problem is I don't have root, and super user says it needs the latest version, but there is no way to do so as I get a error message when I try to update it through the application. Someone please help.

If you have a custom recovery you should be able to install superSU through the recovery just fine and make it work

Since it claimed the process failed, I thought I didn't have root. Is there a way to check for sure?

Download the root checker app from the play store. It will check your phone for the su binary and any superuser management apps. It works very well.

Use this:

Please, watch the video and follow all the instructions. Watch it several times.

The only way to mess this up is if you haven't followed the instructions properly.

Also, if you updated your phone with the Samsung update that allowed you to move apps to the SD card, this method won't work. That update broke the ability to root if I'm not mistaken.
