Family Plan Upgrade

I apologize if this question has been asked a million times before, but I am not sure what parameters to use in order to search for the answer. Soon, Verizon is changing their data pricing to a tiered system. We have a three phone family plan, and one phone just became eligible for verizon's early annual update. This number is not mine, but I want to use it to upgrade MY phone. The individual at the verizon store confirmed that this can be done. Has anyone else here ever done this? How did the process work? I really want this upgrade so that I can beat the new data plans. Thanks!

It most definitely can be done and it's an easy process. You can do it online now too.
