Fascinate with 2.1 - what's missing?

I'm a newbie, don't own the Fascinate yet, but am leaning towards getting it. I'm confused about what it won't do while it's running the stock Android 2.1.
Did I hear that it won't do wireless tethering with 2.1? Verizon's site says it has 2.1 & works as a mobile hotspot. This is the same as tethering, right?

Does 2.1 make it not compatible with web sites running flash, or is it just not compatible with the latest version of Flash? How well does it play with YouTube?

If I root it, can I restore it to factory condition in case I need support from Verizon?

you need to pay to make it hot spotable, yes it runs tethering, no it doesnt run flash

but we have froyo (2.2) so you can get it to run flash and yes we have files that can get you back to stock like its right out of the box

I don't know anything about wireless tethering, but I can answer your other two questions.
2.1 will not run flash at all. That is a feature of Android 2.2

If you root you can easily restore to a factory condition. The steps can be found in this thread:

Thanks for the answers. Is there a difference between tethering & hotspotable?

If no Flash, what does Verizon mean by "access to YouTube". I thought YouTube vids were Flash.

I'll probably go for the leaked 2.2 if it isn't official by the time I get it. Twice I've been offered the opportunity to upgrade before my 2 years is up. I think they offered an Incredible for $0 at the time. If I wait until the Thunderbolt is released, they'll probably give the Fascinate away. If not, pre-owned is just $40.

If you root, you can use Barnacle Wifi Tether which works wonderfully, and its free. Youtube still works on 2.1. Not all videos can be played though.

2.2 also has a few speed boosts under the hood and will feel marginally faster than 2.1. Furthermore, you can move apps off the main memory into the SD card. This is at least somewhat helpful if you have many large apps given the fact that we only have 2 GB of internal memory available to us.

Those plus flash were my reasons for moving to a leaked version of 2.2 rather than staying at 2.1. I believe there are also some security features and such that are new, but those aren't of too much use to me.

I really appreciate the answers & I'm learning some new stuff. There are a lot of terms tossed around that fly over my head like Odin, ROMs, different EBXX numbers, etc. Is there a glossary section here so I don't have to ask or be lost until I've read 100 threads?

Why yes there is right here:
http://www.androidcentral.com/dictionary

That doesn't cover all the terms you asked about so here's some further helpful reading:

And to further clarify the build numbers it is based off of a lettering and number system to identify the date it was released. First letter is the year with C = 2009, D = 2010, E = 2011. The second letter identifies the month starting at A for January. So EB01 was released February 1, 2011, EB16 was released February 16, 2011, DL30 Was released December 30, 2010.

Thanks. I've read most of what was linked to. Voodoo was mentioned a few times, but never explained. What is it?

voodoo is a kernel to be used with lag fix..... lag fix is this...... the memory in the fascinate is set up to work a certain way,,,, lag fix physically changes the formation of the memory to make it run faster...i dont support this as i dont want to be part of memory failures but thats just a possiblilty not the rule

Flash does not work on 2.1 but youtube does via the separate youtube app.

both tethering and wifi hotspot are an upcharge but rooting and installing an app makes it free.

Rooting is very easy on this device and worth it but even if you chose not to this is a great device.
