FCC probing Verizon over data overage complaints

Probably. I am not sure if it was caused by a malfunctioning app or a glitch in Verizon's system.

That is pretty nuts. I assume this had a hand into them looking -- Verizon data overages, other charges hit Florida mom for $9,100 | cleveland.com.
Can't say by this article what happened or who is to blame, but come on. If you're getting 40-50 notices about going over in a few hours and you ignore it, perhaps you should pay at least a little "stupid tax" (Dave Ramsey reference for learning financial lessons the hard way) for not checking into it before it got to this point.

I agree. By the time I got the 5th text I would have called and been like "So.. what is going on?"

No doubt Verizon would use this defense... She was stupid for ignoring all the warning messages.

Rogue app, and not surprisingly, Amazon.

"This is causing huge problems for lots of customers, including Valarie Gerbus, the Florida woman who last month racked up a Verizon bill for $9,100. (A day after The Plain Dealer wrote about her case, Verizon wiped out her bill.) As it turns out, the majority of the 569 gigabytes she used stemmed from an app for Amazon or something connected to Amazon Web Services.

A Verizon technician apparently spotted the problem and told her to remove everything on her phone that said "Amazon," she said. The technician had looked at her account and found that, somehow, her phone connected to Amazon more than 400 times in the last month. She had no idea how.

My mother-in-law just noticed she was almost 2GB over her 1 GB plan. She's been known to turn mobile data on and also disable the limit data usage setting on her phone (she has Wi-Fi), so we thought that was the issue again. It was, but I also noticed the Amazon app on her phone was by far the most outrageous data user, accounting for most of the mobile data use. Obviously nowhere near the $9,000 in the above article, but looks like Amazon has a potential problem on their hands.

I manually force closed and disabled her Amazon app, so at least it shouldn't be accessing the net at all anymore.

Amazon app has been problematic for years...

Verizon still finds it more beneficial to them to keep it...
