Few thoughts after a few minutes with the G4

UPDATE: After a few hours with the phone now, it still seems to stay slightly warm. I think it probably has to do with the fact that the phone is very thin (compared to my old G2) and maybe the leather back? It is something I think I could live with and might be minimized a bit by a case?

The phone is zippier now and less laggy. Chrome browser lags the worst, but that could be because of stuff loading.

I haven't noticed any touchscreen issues - something widely reported by many. That is nice.

Gonna take the weekend to play around with it and take some pictures and video.

I'm irritated about the lack of smart settings with this phone - I'm wondering if I need to buy the unlocked version (would it work on Verizon?).

I bought a black leather G4 from Verizon for full retail (I'm on unlimited data) and it arrived yesterday. My initial thoughts are:

*The phone was very warm/nearly hot to the touch when it was on. I even let it rest for a few minutes and when I picked it back up it was still hot -this was after it was just sitting on it's opening screen before anything was done to it. This is very troubling as my G2 rarely gets that warm.

*There was very noticeable stuttering and lag when trying to do things such as pull down the notification screen/menu, swiping pages, pulling up the app drawer, etc. Much more noticeable than my G2.

*The feel of the phone is different....to say the least...The corners should be more rounded or something..and the phone is almost too thin. I'm sure I could get used to it, but I'm not sure I like it...if I were to keep it I'd definitely use a case of some sort.

So after about 10 minutes I boxed the phone right back up. Rash? Maybe. But I'm thinking I'm going to send it back and maybe go with the Nexus 6 until something better comes out or some of the kinks get worked out of this thing. I may fire it up one more time as I have some breathing room be fore sending it back. I'm not looking for someone to talk me back from the ledge so to speak, but I am interested to hear the responses about the points I mentioned above. I do not mind LG's UI at all - in fact I kind of like it.

I've been using an LG G2 for over a year and have been very happy with it. It is still very quick and responsive for the most part (I am rooted and stopped taking updates which I think has helped). I was expecting to be a little more blown away by this phone. I'm pretty disappointed.

The main reason I wanted to make the jump was for a better camera and video capabilities, as well as the automatic google awesome video creations (my g2 will only make collages and animations, not the video collages that are really neat). I have a young child so pictures and video are very important.

Since you already bought it, I would suggest to use it for several days. The initial setup especially if you are downloading or updating apps may cause the phone to run hot and cause the phone to be laggy.

In normal usage email browsing and the like I don't notice much lag or heat. If you are noticing this in light duty applications after a few days usage then you might have a defective phone, and should get a replacement.

10min and you're boxing it up? Come on man, these posts are getting ridiculous. Any smartphone user knows the phone has a lot going on in the first 10min of operation and it will get warm, mine did. I let it rest for a good hour after entering in my Gmail and exchange info. After that it has been running cool.

A lot of drama these days.

If you're not willing to take some time to set it up properly then the iPhone is probably for you.

Mine didn't last past 6pm initially, now I go to bed with 50% left on the battery. All other issues have been worked out.

At least put a bit of effort into it, it's a nice product.

Expectations = disappointment

But 10mins is really rash lol. Anyways, good luck with your next choice!

@philosopherisdog I'd strongly suggest doing a factory reset and trying again. I'm on T-mo and had issues with WiFi calling working (thinking it was a self impose issue) and I performed a reset and not only did wifi calling work again, but I noticed overall performance improvements.

A few minutes, LOL.

You mention:

Heat when first setting up. This is normal with any phone. It is downloading all your apps, etc. and configuring things, of course it's going to run hot.

Keyboard/touchscreen issues: VZW just pushed out an update that most seem to say has resolved this issue.

You say you'll wait the "kinks are worked out" but the only thing not already addressed is your comment on the corners of the phone and that will not be worked out.

I had all of the issues you described and they were fixed by an update I received yesterday. I'm on at&t.

Yea my phone ran hot the first cycle also but no more...it was also lagging but now this thing is the best piece of tech ive ever owned...i did a lot of research before getting this phone and you said picture s and video is very important to you.. The nexus does not hold a candle to the g4 in that area so i wud wait a little longer so you could make a better informed decision

Take the over air update (vs98611A) and then do a master reset. Then install your apps. Let the phone settle in for atleast 48 hours. If you want a better camera you definitely got it with this phone.

Mine got hot the first hour or so and the battery wasn't great day one but now it never gets hot, battery lasts forever. I charge it every night but it still is around 50%

Getting "fed up" after 10 minutes?? I'm smelling a troll!!

I upgraded from the G2 as well and didn't feel totally in love with the G4 at first. I'm starting to use the G4 more and it's growing on me. I don't notice mine getting warm (gray plastic back, plus in a case now). Part of me still likes the size of the G2 more. The screen color of the G4 seems a bit too cool for me, whereas the G2 was perfect. I don't hate the G4, but it wasn't an immediate win for me either.

I've had mine for about 72 hours and noticed no lag whatsoever, though I do have the European unlocked version - all the problems I see reported seem to stem from the US carrier versions, glad I don't have to deal with that.

As for heat, mine was toasty warm for the first 24 hours whilst I sorted everything the way I wanted. Fine since.

Set up is when the phone works the hardest. I too have the Verizon variant and mine got warm during set up.
The first few days it was a little "buggy" but settled in. I never experienced lag or touch screen issues and at this time I am very happy with the overall performance. I agree that since you have 14 days give it a few days longer....won't cost you anything.

Since you already bought it, I would suggest to use it for several days. The initial setup especially if you are downloading or updating apps may cause the phone to run hot and cause the phone to be laggy.

Philo, welcome.
I have used Chrome Beta for a long time, and prefer it over Chrome.
If you haven't already done so, go into your mobile network settings, and make sure your phone is NOT set for global. It should be set for LTE/CDMA.
