Fill the second screen on the right of the main home screen with an item in every position.

Create a 3rd screen to the right of the 2nd screen by pulling another app out of the app drawer, holding down on any app and dragging it to the right to create 3rd screen.

Long press anywhere on the new 3rd screen to a view all existing home screens as seen in the snapshot.

Long press on the 3rd home screen from this view.

Drag 3rd home screen from all the way on the right to the left of the main home screen, bringing it passed the main home screen so that you now have a third 3rd home screen on the left of the main home screen.

Actually, don't even bother making a 3rd screen.

Just long press on the 2nd screen anywhere to get to this view. Drag this screen passed the main home screen to get it on the left instead of the right.

Unfortunately I think I jumped the gun. Upon pressing the home button it seems to automatically go to the screen furthest to the left. Sorry for the false report of a solution!

Doesn't work for me; whatever screen I create to the left of the prior home screen, becomes the new home screen. Any other pointers?

On the VZ support site, it says that you can change it by tapping on a blank area, then long-press on the panel you want to be the new home screen, then tap on a blank area of that panel. That doesn't work either.

Really the only way is to install a third party launcher (like Nova Launcher) that lets you do this by design. The stock launcher is meant to work with the default home screen as the left-most screen, probably to match the design of Google's launcher for the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 (and the Google Now launcher.)
