File Manager only shows some of my photos in DCIM

I have a Nexus 5 phone. When I use Google Photos, I have lots and lots of photos. When I look in the DCIM folder, there are only a few photos. When I look at the DCIM photos using Windows Explorer, it is the same thing.
I have also looked in the Thumbnail folder and it has a few photos.
The sum of the 2 is not the total photos I see in Google Photos.
I have tried to map my phone as a network drive and I still get the same result.
 
Welcome to Android Central! Google Photos shows you all of your photos on the device as well as in your Google Photos cloud. Those extra photos are presumably all in your cloud (that you backed up or uploaded previously), and are synced to the Google Photos for display -- but they're not physically stored on the phone's storage.
