Files by Google doesn't remember file access privs

Hi;
Android 10 on Moto G7 with Samsung 256GB EVO SD card.
Every time I want to delete a file on the SD card using the Files by Google app, I am asked to allow the app access to the SD card.
I have done this many times, yet for some reason, the app does not remember that I allowed access before.
This is not specific to this SD card, as it happened on the 128GB card I had installed previously.

In App settings, I have allowed access to SD card. I don't see any other settings that would make the access permanent.

Most of the time I just plug in the USB cable and use Windows to do the job. No problems there.

Is there a way to grant permanent access to the SD card by the Files app?
