Google's new Files Go app has a nice little toggle you can add to the native Quick Settings. It acts as a shortcut, and therefore can save you some homescreen real estate. I'm not sure if the icon gives you realtime information -- i.e., if the piechart reflects your actual free space. My current storage usage is 20%, and that icon looks more like 25%.
To add it, swipe down the Quick Settings panel, tap the Edit button (the one that looks like a pencil), and drag the Storage toggle into the main panel. This is on my Pixel 2 XL running Oreo -- I think you can do it on Nougat as well, but it isn't available on Marshmallow.
