Final Prep before rooting, quick question

So i'm finally ready to root my evo after reading tons and tons of threads over the last month. (along with watching a few youtube videos..)

however, i have a few minor questions about what i should to before i start to root.

I understand that i can temporary root with z4root and then use titanium back up to save all my data, settings, contacts, apps. However, last time i tried to do this titanium back up kept saying that i didn't have root access. I never restarted the phone so i know that i didn't reset the temporary root... any advice on how to get a back up made before i start?

Also, i'm planning on using the guide that Fred posted, but i have the following questions..

Immediately after i have completed the root process, will my phone look exactly the same and just have root access?

After the root is complete i should get rom manager from the market along with amonra to back up my set up? or do i nandroid back up first?

to do an nandroid back up i just go into the boot loader and navigate towards it correct? or do i need to download something as well?

as you can see, i'm not so concerned with the actual rooting process.. i want to make sure i know how to make a proper backup of everything that i can possible back up before, and right after i do the rooting process. feel free to offer any advice or suggestions!

thanks for the help everyone!

I wouldn't be so concerned about backing up before you root.
After you have completed the root you're phone will look no different that before other than a new icon 'superuser' which you won't even use.
After you root I would download ROM Manager and perform a backup from there. It will reboot your phone into recovery and and perform the back up which will take about 4-5 mins depending.
It's worth noting when you use execute ROM Manager it is most likely going to ask you if you want to upgrade to Clockrecoverymod 3.0.0.5 (that is if you're using clockwork) DO NOT UPGRADE! There are way to many issues with the newest release and ALL the roms work on the old 2.6.?? version anyway.
I'd also snag: Root Explorer, SetCPU, and of course wireless tether.

Thanks for the tip about those programs.

So I don't need to do an nandroid backup? From manager can do it for me? Just want to make sure...

Thanks

I took the easy way on rooting and used Unevoked. But I thought you had to be rooted to do a Nandroid. I do it through Clockwork, and you only get that if you're rooted.

okay thats what i thought, that nandroid was after i was rooted.

so it seems that once i get rooted, i make a backup using nandroid or clockwork or some other program.

once i have it backed up using a method of my choice i can start flashing roms and what not?

Superbrute89,
After rooting, like you, my first step was to download ROM Manager.
-ROM Manager is an easy way for beginners to backup and load ROMS (see Youtube). I used this to flash my first ROM (Cyanogen).
- After you feel more comfortable, you will want to flash ROMS manually, as many ROMS over at XDA are not in ROM Manager
-As mentioned by another poster, ROM Manager will load Clockwork Recovery and create a back up when flashing the ROM
- Back up files created by Clockwork will appear in a "Clockwork" folder, while Amon Ra's backup will appear in a "Nandroid" Folder (someone please correct me if I'm wrong).
-Understand that Nandroid files are huge, so you may want to rename and keep only one or two copies of your most recent (or preferred) ROMs
- I typically manually create a new Nandroid once I have all of my apps and settings just right (since the backup will restore exactly as you created it).
- I used Clockwork Recovery to flash to Amon RA (More Recoveries/Flash Alernate Recovery). I have read that Amon Ra wipes old files more cleanly when you are flashing new ROMS.
- Backups created by Clockwork cannot be restored by Amon Ra and vice-versa.

I too relied on these forums and Youtube for info before I rooted. I find that together, they made things easier to understand.

As mentioned many times before, please always ensure that you have a Nandroid backup prior to flashing any ROMs, themes or Kernels. Sooner or later, you WILL need to rely on the backup to restore after something has went awry during the flashing process.
Have fun! I'm now enjoying my EVO more that ever.

Taadow

thanks for the advice, i will be rooting my phone in a few hours.

i got z4root to work as a temp root, and used titanium to make a back up so i'm pretty much just doing some final reading before i root.

my last questions is this, if i'm using the method that fred did a sticky for (which loads sprint lovers rom) will my phone look different or should it be the same as before i root?

thanks everyone

I haven't used Sprint Lover's, but I believe that it has the appearance of stock, but optimized (and perhaps fewer pre-installed apps).

I have used a very similar method as the one posted by thefredelement and I can confirm that the Sprint Lovers ROM keeps everything looking stock and keeps the interface pretty much stock too. If you want to see some screenshots, head over to the dev's thread:

[ROM] 02/25/11 | SPRINT LOVERS | 2.2 | 3.70.651.1 | Radio/Wimax/PRI All-In-One - xda-developers

I found it was a good rooted ROM to cut my teeth on, but I ended up giving CM6.1.2 a try and and currently a regular user of Calkulin's EViO 2 ROM (still Sense based, but with some more polish).

The nice thing about the method posted by thefredelement is that you will have the Amon_RA recovery and can use that for making Nandroid backups and restores as well as flashing ROMs, themes, whatever. I would recommend that you get familiar with the rebooting into recovery method for changing things because it seems to be more reliable for those of us that are rooted when compared to using ROM Manager and ClockworkMod Recovery.
