Android Central Question

Trying to connect Android Auto to car's Android Auto capable infotainment. The car has a USB C connection while my phone (moto g5 plus) has a micro usb port. Most cables I've tried only charge the phone, but don't connect to android auto. Is there a specific data cord that's Micro USB to USB C for connecting to the infotainment?

Welcome to Android Central! Any cable should work, assuming they're not damaged or specifically charge only (and I doubt there are any charge-only microUSB-to-USB-C cables). When you connect the phone to the head unit, swipe down the notification panel on the phone and tap the USB notification -- make sure it's not set to Charge Only there.

Original Poster here after I registered. The cord I ordered off of Amazon does say charging, but the description mentioned data sync. I even went into the developer options to configure the USB connection to data transfer, but the radio unit still doesn't detect android auto on the phone. Was hoping there's a recommended cord someone has used, Micro to USB C. The car is a GTI.

Ok, so just to be clear, you did swipe down the notification panel and tap the USB notification to see what kind of connection is selected, right?

Yes indeed. I ordered 2 more cables from Amazon to see if they would work, linked below, and should find out tomorrow. Also going to try my wife's Pixel 3a with a USB c to USB c so I'm hoping at least one of those works. Just wasn't sure if there was a recommended brand as recognized by android central as a reliable data transfer cord.

HI, welcome!
Yeah give that a try see how it works out

The cords worked! In fact the provided adapter from VW worked too that originally did not. Apparently I had to reset the car's radio unit to its factory settings, and only then did it fully recognize my phone. So for anyone else who find themselves in a similar vote, reset your radios first before buying up a bunch of cords.
