Finger pointing with the 4.0.4 update

Like the rest of you, I've had my GNex for months and have grown very impatient waiting for the 4.0.4 update. I have bluetooth issues galore, random reboots, and bad battery life.

Soooo,,, I finally decided to pay my local Verizon dealer a visit and speak with the manager. I was pleasant but firm and told him that the Verizon service has just been horrible thus far. I explained my various issues. We spoke for about 15 minutes. He was understanding and polite.

The manager then looks in his system to see if an update is coming. He said at his level, all he can see is one week out and he doesn't see one coming. He then says I should call Samsung to ask them. Interesting, eh?

I call Samsung. It takes me 20 minutes of waiting and talking to basically get them to tell me that Samsung DOES push out updates when it's from a major version to another major version (i.e, Gingerbread to ICS). She said that for minor updates, those come from the carrier.

Verizon points to Samsung.
Samsung points to Verizon.

What a horrible way to treat your customers.

The in store reps and managers cant see further out than a week even if Verizon is the one pushing out the update. You will need to go higher.

Unless it's iOS, smartphone updates do not get pushed to Verizon devices until Verizon says so. That's the way it works, that's the way it has always worked. Verizon has the final say, period.

Samsung doesn't have anything to do with the Nexus updates. They are all 100% stock GOOGLE. This is a Verizon issue, plain and simple.

Ahem..... as has been covered in the MYRIAD of threads discussing your OTA.... the update gets pushed from Google, after it is approved by Verizon. Yes Verizon is the reason for the delay, as they have a notoriously slow process for testing and approving OTA updates.

End of thread.

I can't figure out why Apple is allowed to push any update at anytime on VZW, but android updates for any device must be tested and pushed out by Verizon. Can someone tell me why this is the case?

You really need to ask that? Apple = control, plain and simple. They are focused on creating a solid product people want, and won't take any bull s**t from any carrier. That's why you don't see any bloatware on an iPhone like you do the myriad of Android devices.

Some hate the walled garden that is Apple, but it does have it's benefits at times.

I get that. I guess i'm just not sure why Google wouldn't push for the same thing, at least with a Nexus device. You can't tell me Apple has that much more clout when it comes to carrier agreements than Google.

Here is my understanding, which may or may not be correct:

For various technical reasons, recent CDMA Android devices implement core telephony functionality in .apk files provided in binary form by the carriers. To function correctly, these .apk files must be signed by the so-called ?platform? key.

That means to me that Google can no longer directly update CDMA phones, the OS has to be "signed" by the carrier (Verizon) before it's updated.

But once it's signed (by Verizon) I don't know if the update comes from Google's servers or Verizon's servers. We all know Android 4.0.4 has been out for a couple of months, so.....

Perhaps the iPhone and iOS are immune to this and Apple can update the devices directly.

Whatever the reason is, I'm over Verizon and my Galaxy Nexus stuck on 4.0.2.

If you can't read it because it requires a login, just google the headline and click on the link.

basically it says that jellybean is already coming around Thanksgiving. It also explains a lot of the Nexus strategy and battles w/verizon and other carriers.

Just root it and put the update yourself. With the passion that you have, you need to take matters into your own hands.

I have had 4.0.4 for about 2 months now. And i just put the new rom on just a couple of days ago.

We all want the update but can we please stop with these redundant threads with either rumors or complaints about the update or lack of one. It's just overkill at this point. Every Gnex owner on Vzw is in the same boat. I'm not trying to be ignorant I'd just like to visit this site and not see the same threads worded differently everyday.

I look at these threads as entertainment. Fun to watch ppl wallow in misery bewilderment. ;p

Count me as one of em. Any benefits are far and away outweighed by the goodness of Android. :D

Apple saddly has much more power when it comes to carriers than Google has. Look at it like this, Verizon has how many Android devices to sell? Do you really think Verizon cares if it has the Nexus to sell or not?

Sure VZW will sell it and be happy to do so, but would they do anything extra to get it? NOPE cause honestly it isn't that big of a deal to them.
