Have you tried registering your fingerprints again?
I tend to agree with you. It took me soooo long to register three fingers. Kept promting me to press hard, move it around many many times.
Finally got it working sort of OK. But deleted all the prints and did it again. It's OK for me, not great. One thing I've realized it that a rather than placing my fingertip on the sensor gently as I could do with the optical, it's better to do a firm tap.

Just got my P9P today ... and the new fingerprint system still doesn't work for me. My fingerprints are just old & faint, not gonna read, no matter how hard I press on the display! (I put on my screen saver and increased the display sensitivity first.) Fortunately, facial recognition still works real well, and I'm so used to putting in my PIN (since the Pixel 2!) that it's no big deal. I really WAS hoping that it was gonna work, though!

@NMCynthia Same. I've had mine for about a week, tried three different glass protectors (2X Ultra-Glass, 1X ArmorSuit). I tried the UG once, didn't work well, could barely register my fingerprints (in all combos of the Screen Protector Mode and Adaptive Screen Sensitivity Mode), tried the 2nd, figuring I had gotten it a hair off or something. Nope, same deal, I'd say it took 5-10lbs of force to get my fingerprints to register, particularly the finger-tip part.
Tried the ArmorSuit after a couple of days, given that it worked SO well on the P8P, but it's about the same as the first two.
Not sure what I/we are doing or not doing, weird deal for sure (given that most stuff I see is either "it works great!", or "it totally sucks at reading my fingerprint with this installed". Hmm.

;) I don't know about you, but I'm kinda old, so I think that my fingerprints are just well-worn, and the reader can't deal with it. The face ID works well, thankfully, and so does Extend Lock with my home and watch. I'll just continue to deal with it, since I really like the phone ... I much prefer the size of the 9Pro over the 6P, 7P, & 8P's in my past.

Yeah, I'm getting up there too, no question of that.

I'd accept that, assuming we keep tweaking things to better recognize fingers of all ages (the new A15 print learning-model sounds. like it has promise), *except*, that I recently bought a Samsung S20FE, for using as a "small tablet" in the garage. It's got a solid glass screen protector on it (particularly apropos for the use  ). It works with nearly 100% recognition/unlock, zero need to push down like I'm driving tacks with my thumb, hmm. I'm pretty sure these phones have very similar sensors, I believe the same OEM, just an older iteration (on the S20FE).
Oh, and my P8P worked almost flawlessly, with a LOT less pressure, so there's that.
Same exact fingers, just in case you're wondering... ;)
