Just read I was supposed to fully charge s3 fully before playing with phone, have I decreased my battery functionality by not doing this?

I don't think so. Just let the phone die on you before you fully recharge. Repeat these steps at least 3 times. You should be good to go after that.

Don't think anybody has conclusively proven that it affects battery life. The life of batteries is so long scientific testing(controlled charging regimen under observation) isn't probable in the field.

So don't worry about it. If it fails, it'll do so fairly quickly. Which will mean it was defective already and be replaced under warranty. And 1 1/2 years down the road you won't care about paying whatever a new battery costs if you need to replace it ;-)

I just got mine and it is sitting on my desk at work, off and charging. I can't use it anyway since the SIM it came with isn't for the number I want to use it with, so I need to wait to go to Verizon after I leave. So tempting to turn it on but I don't think I can even use it without a SIM in it

You can activate it but they'll prolly use the new SIM card which will mean you'll need another one for the other phone.

Call tech support from another phone and have them do an esn swap. Did it bout an hour ago

They want you to charge the battery since the software that pegs charge on a 0-100% scale works better if it starts with the highest level (and when the phone is off it will charge strictly based on max allowable voltage). The instruction has nothing at all to do with battery life except for the off chance that the battery came nearly dead (not likely since the phone was probably made less than a month ago) and if you absolutely drain it out before charging it again you could hurt its lifespan. Don't sweat it, just turn it off and let it charge to 100% at some point and you will be fine.

Don't have the S3 yet... but in the past Verizon has always told me "Drain the phone till it turns off, then charge it. Do it 1-2 more times if needed!" Somewhere I heard at least the first time you should charge it up to 10 hours if you can. No idea if it's true... but every phone I've had since I've heard this stuff, I do this and battery life has always been very good for that phone.
