I was able to use this phone for a day and come IP with some initial observations.

PROS:
Excellent camera. Better aperture than iPhone. Takes better stills than Photon or ET4G.
Excellent camcorder, the best 720p available right now.
High quality build
Clear crisp screen, good colors
Very loud speaker
Crystal clear calls outgoing and incoming
Excellent speakerphone
Sense 3.0
Great sound of musice through wired headphones
Pretty fast with only single-core process
Optimum size at 4"
World phone
1.06 GB available for apps

CONS:
Low RAM amount. Only about 169mb to work with compared to over 800mb on my ET4G.
Accurate, but slow GPS, either due to single core CPU or RAM.
Not great screen for using outdoors. Photon and ET4G are better.
Gets hot when charging or maximum use. Possibly because of aluminum uni-body design
Signal range was not as good as ET4G or Photon, but much better than EVO 3D.

I was hoping to use this as my main device, ET4G is too big and blurry text, Photon pentild display bothers me. I was looking for a 4" device with QHD display, world phone and adequate power. The biggest design flaw with this phone is the small amount of RAM that was installed. It causes severe lag when you have just a few programs running. I envisioned myself needing to kill programs to keep the phone running smoothly and I don't have time for that. That is really my only complaint with this phone. It is an awesome device for someone not interested in heavy gaming, bug more for business. After having the ET4G and Photon it is hard to accept some lag while opening programs and functions, but with more RAM I would have kept this phone.I think that 4" is the sweet spot for the size of a smart phone. Most of us might have 7 or 10" tablets to consume media on and having a smaller phone to carry around makes sense for some of us.

Non-power users could have been appeased with more RAM. This is still an upgrade from the OG EVO4G if you don't want a 3D and want a smaller screen. QHD on a 4" screen is very nice and clear.

We replaced the wife's Hero yesterday and I agree, this phone is pretty amazing.

It does have 768 mb. Task manager is reporting 565mb usable. Gps is really snappy for me. Does tend to get hot when in use but the battery is right under the aluminum plate on the back so I pleased that it does because it is acting as a heat sink. Battery life has been really good. The screen is easy to read in direct sunlight for me.

I am coming from a Palm Pre so the build quality is amazing to me. I do miss multitasking and the way the notification and the menus worked. But so far I am very pleased. Great looking phone.

I agree with the OP about the pros. I specifically got this phone due to the form factor and the build quality. I was going to get the Evo Shift because of the hardware keyboard, but I am glad I got this instead. I don't care about the speed of the of the other Evos because they are just to darn big.

I had a Pre for 2 years and bought the Evo 3D in June. The wifey got the Evo Design yesterday. I'm really impressed with this phone so far. So far I'm lovin HTC,Android,Android Central.

I would recommend calibrating the stock keyboard, if that's what your using, it makes quite a bit of difference. Menu>Settings>Language&Keyboard>Touch Input>Text Input>Calibration Tool.

Here's some great info for Pre refugees thanks to Milominderbinder. Welcome to Android Central !!

For what it's worth, the Design has a 1.2 GHz dual core, not a single core. ;-)

DId they change it? I thought it has a single core. Processor:Single core, 1200 MHz, Qualcomm MSM8655

I love this phone had it 2 days now and coming from the optimus s its a big improvement and yea the battery does heat up pretty hot when i have good service the battery last pretty long but in my high rise apartment my service is a bit shaddy lol and it takes a bit to load a page and drains the battery down and gets warm but overall i love this phone

I have a deal on a iphone 4 8 gig or a evo design... I have the OG evo and looking for a better screen and a little smaller phone.

Should I get the design?

I jumped from the optimus s to this a couple weeks ago. Trident makes an awesome case for it and highly reccomnd it. compared to the optimus I love it. Unfortunatly you need to be on an older version to root and since I already upgraded it it is kinda a pain to get it back and havent yet. workign with a couple guys over at sdx trying to get it back.

I have it updated and rooted. I've also had lotsa trouble with my computer lately so I haven't been able to really help much from my phone alone. As soon as I can get it sorted you can hear from me personally at sdx, but there are also a lot of other people over there willing to help out as well, so the next few weeks should be pretty exciting.

Just stay tuned and be patient. All good things in time...

Just sold my og evo for picked up this for cheap on craigslist, since many people prefer bigger phones these phones are super cheap, bought it for 180 and it was 1 day old lol....

Great little phone, it will take time to adjust coming for the bigger OG evo but it's still a great little performer...

Good build, not that slow, speaker seems decent... not a bad phone, wish it got more love but it's understandable.

I'm with you and think the Design is a great option. Think about it...great size, not too big or small, great screen, removable battery if needed, expandable storage, will get ICS at some point, can take it overseas when needed. Not much to complain about with the Design in my book. Got one for our other line to try. I'm thinking it will be great.

From an EVO 4G, the step up in physical size to Galaxy Nexus, EVO LTE and the SGS3 is pretty significant. And, while they all have great features, they all lack either removable battery or expandable storage and none are international capable for Sprint. The Design is a nice compromise (and not much of a compromise at that).
