Flash Back to Stock

I just recently traded my HTC one for a Droid Maxx on swappa. The maxx was rooted when I received it and I believe I unrooted it using supersu. I'm new to all this and I can't seem to figure out how to flash it back to stock. I just want to have a brand new phone with no trace of the other user on it. When I do a factory reset, nothing erases?? Can some one please help me?

You may need to do an external reset.

Would this permanently damage my phone if I do it wrong?

It should just wipe the data from the phone without changing anything else. Is there a custom ROM on the phone?

Yes I believe so. I'm not sure how to check though. I took a screenshot of the "about phone" maybe that'll help but I can't seem to post it on here

In order to get back to real factory stock, you need to restore FXZ image using RSD Lite utility. Look them up

This works perfectly, have used it without issues. Just do everything it tells you to and you will be back to full stock. Here's the link.

I assume this completely erases your phone (data included), right? I'm contemplating using House of Moto to unroot because it offers the option to preserve data...I'm just intimidated by it and nervous that I'll screw up my otherwise-working-perfectly phone. Also, for step 3, from where did you download the stock factory firmware for the Maxx? Here? Droid-Developers SBF

Used the House of Moto tool - so simple, so quick. I'm back to stock AND preserved all my data.
