How is this done? I'm going to want to do this eventually I'm sure. I've read something about recovery mode, and I don't know how that works, so I assume there's more that I need to know before I try a custom ROM.

Someone wanna explain the process for me, please? :)

Seconded.

I managed to get rooted quickly and I've been reading around on how to flash ROMs and I'm just more confused than I probably should be.

There seems to be different ways you can do it (ROM Managers vs manual) and I'd like to understand the manual way just like I did with the adb rooting. Any chance someone could point us to a post that may give that procedure like Cory's rooting procedure?

In the meantime, I'll keep reading to see if I can figure it out.

Well I'm very new to the whole rooting deal as well (this phone is the first phone I've rooted).

What I do is I have "ROM Manager" and (this was for VirusROM) downloaded the ROM .zip file from the thread and put it on my SD card. I then went on ROM Manager and clicked "Install ROM from SD Card" and selected the VirusROM .zip file. This is how I know to do it. I know that there's also a "download ROM" section in ROM Manager but haven't used it yet. Basically I'd suggest getting ROM Manager :P

**edit** what I think choosing "Install ROM from SD Card" does is flash it for you from recovery mode. You can choose that option from the recovery mode menu too. Still, get ROM Manager.

Ok, that's KIND OF how I thought. You're essentially using the same general method as rooting, except from your phone?

And I got ROM Manager right away, but it was slightly intimidating since I didn't know what to do and how to use it, lol.

Ok, is going with a custom Kernel considered starting slow compared to trying to get a ROM? And can custom Kernels be used on the Stock ROM?

I wanna use Drod's 1.5Ghz Kernel with battery tweaks, if possible on Stock Sense.

How do I back-up my Stock ROM through Recovery Mode?

There are some things you gotta do:

When you start ROM Manager for the first time, be sure to click "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" at the top and let it do all that.

Also backup your current ROM (that's lower on the list in the app) before flashing a new one so if something goes wrong you can always recover back to something you know works.

Kernels I'm not as sure about. I'd also like an answer to that one :) I don't think it's the same method although I could be wrong! Anyone?

What I did was downloaded it right from ROM Manager, and then let the phone back itself up (it asks to do it as a pre-install option).

It's backing up now, and I'll let you know what happens.

Well, my kernel is definitely different. Hopefully it has a positive effect! Can't wait till I can put it through a day of good use for a test :D

Difference between ROM and Kernel? - xda-developers

That might help a little. Also make sure to backup the ROM itself via ROM Manager (it's easy there's a "backup ROM" option).

So I have VirusROM running and I'm going to just go for trial-and-error with the 1.5Ghz Kernel. Here goes nothing!

Worked flawlessly for me! I thought it froze up when it got to one of the Rock Band files, but I forgot how huge the file was, lol. Idk why it backed that up anyways; I don't have it on my phone. >.>

How do you back up the current rom? in Rom Manager? Everytime I try, it brings me back to the HBOOt screen and does nothing from there

Every time you try in rom manager? Make sure you flash clockworkmod recovery from in Rom Manager. Then you should either be able to back up there or choose Reboot into Recovery and manually choose the backup option.

Yep. I just click "Backup Current ROM" and name it the name of my ROM + the date. Did you flash clockword mod recovery?

Yes, I click backup rom, it says (the date and time) then boots into the white HBOOT screen, and theres nothing but reboot, fastboot, etc. Then when I look in the SDCard, theres no backup, or when i try to recover from backup, nothings listed

yes, it says "latest recovery 3.0.2.4" and same for current recovery

Its stock besides root and deleted bloatware, does that make a difference? I just want to save it before I flash a Rom

Hmm check to see if it's flashed. I'd say plug your phone into the wall and then power it off. It should power on into recovery mode (it's just what clockwork mod has been doing)
