Hello! I just switched from iphone and ipad to the galaxy s4 and galaxy tab 2 10.1. I have been super pleased with both except one thing.. how do I text on this new tablet??? All i can see so far is that it has the ATT texting app but i never activated it on my phone bc 1) it wouldnt work and 2) everyone said not to do it. And when I try to text from that on my tablet it says it has to be activated on the phone first :( I also downloaded the SMS pro app on my tablet (same one i have on my phone) but when i text ppl form it it comes from some random number not my acct.. It doesnt make sense to me that this tablet can do so many things.. but not text?? Sorry I am new to the android world and I honestly have no idea what im doing lol Please help me I really dont want to have to return it and go back to my old ipad...Thanks so much!!!

I'd recommend trying an app called MightyText. All you do is set up an account linked to your email, then download the app on your tablet, and you can text from your tablet! You can also use it on your computer if you want.

Welcome to the Android family. I don't have this tablet but can you sent messages on wifi or it's not letting you do that?

no.. like i can send messages through my sms pro even when im not on wifi but when my friends receive them they come from like a 00002567 number.. not my phone number :( on my ipad i was able to send text messages through my phone number account bc they had a "messages" app already installed on it when i bought it.. im just not sure why samsung wont allow their customers to text through their phone acct? its so confusing..

It's an android limitation. We all thought they'd fix it with the new Hangouts app, but they dropped the ball big time.

On verizon, I use the verizon messaging app, which works just like iMessage. As to whether or not your AT&T app would work the same, I guess the best way to find out is try it and if it sucks, uninstall.

How is it an Android limitation? Does iOS allow it by default? No, because iMessage is not a real texting app.

yes but i was hoping for something that would message from my phone number not gmail acct :( however if worse comes to worst then that'll have to suffice :) thanks so much for the suggestion!

It messages from your phone number. It only uses your email account to connect to your phone.

Edited:

iOS can do it by default, on any carrier. It may be a carrier issue on android, since verizon messaging does it... But I'm not sure.

iMessage is a real texting app. It transmits texts to all devices regardless of whether or not it has SMS, and regardless of the manner in which it was sent.

It's not fully functional if it only works across a single mobile OS.

I use both Textie and Voxer. Voxer does voice, text, and pictures, it also works internationally. But it requires both paties to have the app. Textie sends text to all phones, while it doesn't give your number, it does say who you are.

I've never owned an iPhone, but I am an iPad user. I understand your switch from iPhone to Android (just not the S4 part :) ), but why in the hell did you get rid of your iPad ???

Cool I need to try the att texting app on my HP Touchpad. Can anyone put up a link from the play store so I can get the right one?

Sure it is. You can send to any phone on any carrier from one app, and you know that your recipient will get it. You don't have to wonder if they will get the message. The service simply entices you to have an iphone because it is all inclusive, but also saves "text fees" if you communicate between iphone users.
And, if someone with an AT&T android texts someone with a Verizon iphone, the message shows up on the ipad anyway.

I'm not seeing the issue you are having getting this.

I know sprint doesn't have anything like this, and Verizon does, and AT&T might. But there is no universal android app that has this function.

Maybe when BBM comes to android, we'll get it. I had really hoped that Hangouts would solve this problem.

Odd, I can't seem to use imessage to text my phone from my ipod touch (to my phone number) but, it seem like you're saying I should be able to?

Are your contacts synced? I used to have an iPad and iphone, and I know that I texted people on their mobile from my ipad (regardless of their device).

Maybe if you don't use an iphone, it won't work. I honestly don't know. I ditched apple 2 years ago.

Sorry if I was wrong and sounded like a jerk.

I just saved my cell as a contact to test. I think that will only work with iOS devices, unless the sending one is an iPhone. (since the others can't actually SMS by themselves.)

So, iMessage is really IM, but can integrate SMS on iPhone. (as best I can figure with the minor test)
