Anyone else other than myself concerned with all the talk about how fragile this phone is. I've seen numerous reports of the screen breaking and the phone is hardly even in peoples hands yet.....

I'm tempted to cancel my pr-order and wait for something else.....

Keep a frame of reference. Darn near every Samsung phone released in the last couple years have all had constant references to how cheaply they were made and how fragile they feel. ...Yet there have been millions sold and all major carriers still clamor to get them onto their networks.

Do you really think carriers would want a lot of phones with high warranty rates on their network?

This is the SMARTEST post I have seen posted in some time here! Congrats!!

I mean seriously, ANY phone is fragile if you drop it hard enough!! The iphones screen shatters EASILY when dropped on a hard surface YET they sell MILLIONS!! This thread should be aborted!!

Also keep in mind that forums are filled with people who are having some kind of problem with their device, not nearly as many participate in forums just to say "it works great". I would bet every major launch of a new device fills up the forums with some reported catastrophic failure of some sort. It will probably be a while before there is a real consensus on the "fragility" of the GS3. As mentioned above, people that don't like Samsung/Galaxy love to refer to how it will fall apart, since it is plastic, even though they may have no real frame of, other than their bias.

ALL phones are made of glass and plastic, and some metal. Any phones display will/can break if dropped. The S3 and other phones with Gorilla Glass will be more durable but can still break. What are you going to wait for that does not have a glass display?

Where is this "all the talk" occurring? Because from a quick scan of all the S3 forums, I did not find a single thread about the "fragility" of the S3.

This phone is like a hot girl. At first everyone is like "OMG! I want her SO bad!"

Then when they realize they can't get her it turns into, "Meh. I could take or leave her. She supposedly has a lot of problems anyway. I'll just wait for a new hotter girl to come along."

I dropped my Samsung Fascinate (when I had it) at least a dozen times on the ground outside with no case on it (I prefer to go naked :p), and other than a few nicks in the casing, the phone was fine. My wife's Fascinate is still going strong, and she uses it all day every day, while often chasing after our 3 year old, who uses it probably more than she does.

I love how people talk about how fragile the Samsung Galaxy phones are supposed to be, yet there are very few real world examples of people complaining about how fragile their Galaxy phone is.

Well thanks guys....wasn't trying to just post a thread just to post....I am not concerned about the plastic which a lot of people are...I'm referring to the glass....how many times I've read through different forums, I haven't seen screen break issues come up until now. Someone said it just broke while in their pocket, another one dropped it 1 meter high on their carpet and it broke....theres more but thats just a couple of them that i have read...I just wanted to see what others peoples thoughts are on this so thanks to those of you who commented and didn't complain about my thread....

Just to come in here for a second, the Evo4GLTE has been in a few of the forums also for screen breakage. I just really question the strength of the so called gorilla glass on these phones. when they a'll seem to break so easily. I would bet manufacturers could come out with something a little stronger, as $150.00-$200.00 is all-out money to spend too replace these screens.... Just sayin

I'm not complaining about your thread, it's a legitimate concern when plunking down a lot of cash for a new piece of technology. But I think there is more evidence, as people have already commented here and elsewhere, that ALL phones are fragile because they have a glass screen. But the Galaxy phones are no more or less fragile than any others out there, IMO. I think you'll be fine with your GSIII. And even if it turns out there is some kind of weird issue that is causing some of them to have the glass crack, or whatever, I'm sure you'll get a replacement courtesy of Samsung.

You have to consider, that if you plan to buy a phone anytime in the forseeable future, it will have gorilla glass (or a competing but comprable glass). So your only option to avoid glass displays, is to go without a smartphone.

Quite true. Everybody is on the GG2 bandwagon, and for good reason: it will keep your screen looking new in spite of most life will throw at it. However, GG IS more prone to shattering if struck on-edge; not that it will, but it is more prone. Still, as firetruck41 says, it's not like you're really going to have many options. Best advice: don't drop your phone...or put an impact-absorbing case on it to play it safe.

"Only one thing in the world could've dragged me away from the soft glow of electric sex gleaming in the window..."

Perhaps a GSIII?

Hey folks,
I read somewhere (and I apologize, I can't find the link right now) but I believe, if I recall correctly; the larger intent of using Gorilla Glass was to protect against scratches, chips and other minor damages to ensure it maintains its functionality as a touch screen e.g. no dead spots. And yes, Gorilla is also shatter resistant, but I don't think they have made a claim that is 100% shatter proof. Remember it is still Gorilla "GLASS". I'll post the reference as soon as I find it.

p.s.
The SGS3 is the best smartphone thus far! I haven't found a reason to complain yet.

Except for maybe that it didn't come with a Little Orphan Annie secret decoder ring... Maybe there's an app for that. :p

I know your post is kinda old but i wanted to chime in. I have a gs3 and i love it. However, i have broken the screen 2 times. Once from waist level when it fell outta my shirt pocket and again when it fell outta my hand while sitting on a cooler. I replaced the phone between breakings...lol. this is my 3rd smartphone and the first one I've broken. I dropped another one while running and it caught under my son's wagon wheel and dragged and didnt break...lmao. anyway just an fyi.

As others said don't base your choice on how easily the phone breaks...you can get a protective case and drop your phone 100 times and it would still look new. All hardware is vulnerable to error and brreaking, but it depends on how the user treats the device. I think you should be fine as long as you have a case
