Just got an email saying they are going to give free VR headset for being one of the first to pre-order the Pixel! That's pretty awesome.

Yeah, it's listed as a pre-order bonus on their website. I just don't know what it would be used for. Are there many games or apps that support it?

I've never tried VR but am mildly interested in it.. The free VR is just another super duper sweet bonus for Pixel owners. I would not have purchased it but I will certainly take it and use it for free.. :D

Samsung has been doing this for over a year, google is just copying their strategy. Price of phone is inflated to include the phone and any other ecosystem "features" they want you to have in addition. You are not getting it for free, you paid for it already.

So if I buy the Daydream when it comes out, then later I buy the Pixel, they'll subtract the price of the already purchased Daydream from the price of the phone? Sweet deal!

No.

This is not hard to understand. "because you made your purchase (Pixel) during the pre-order period, you are eligible to receive the new Daydream..."

Not the other way around.

Nope! People didn't already pay for it because it's FREE to Pixel pre-orders..

What about the people who order / buy next month and don't get the VR? They are going to be paying the same price for the phone so I guess, using that type of math, that they will pay an $80 penalty for not pre-ordering???

It's a freebie bonus for pre-ordering plain and simple..

Yeah, except prices of the phone itself are usually discounted a few months after launch. In the end, pre-order with 'free' gift or not, everyone pays roughly the same.

I highly doubt Google will drop the price of the Pixel phones.... I explained this in another thread just a few minutes ago why that is..

Oh, I get it. So if I order the phone on November 1, even though the promotion is over, I'll still get the Daydream because it's included in the price of the phone.
Or if i decide that I don't want the headset because VR gives me a headache, I can just subtract the cost of it from how much I'm paying for the phone.
That's pretty cool.

No that's not the way it's going to work..

If you pre-order the phone you get a code in about 4 weeks that can be used to claim the VR. Google makes it clear this is while supplies last but they don't indicate how many are available for the offer.. There might be 10,000 or one million.. Only Google knows. Once pre-orders end, so does the offer and / or once they reach their pre-determined allotted number, the offer ends.

Basically it could already be over and we don't know it...

And no you can't choose to not take the VR and knock $80 off the price of the phone.. If you get the VR you can always sell it...

so if the pre order is done and when people order the pixel without the free VR then they paid for VR but they are not getting it??
