Ok, so I was wondering if three was a temporary root that allows you to tether. I don't know anything about rooting. I've been wanting to for a while but can't seem to find the answers I want.

Don't know what you are trying to get internet to, but if it's a laptop, clockworkmod tether in
The play store will let you tether over USB without root.

I want to do my wife iPad when we aren't home.

The thing I want to know is how long does it take to root and is it possible to unroot? also is it fairly easy. I'm a little scared I would screw it up

To answer your questions, rooting shouldn't take more than 30 minutes once you familiarize yourself with the process. Unrooting is indeed possible. The first question to you is, are you unlocked? If not, you'll need to do this before the rooting begins. The entire process is simple, and there are tons of guides that outline it step by step. Your phone is safe also, because S-On still provides safeguards to the more sensitive areas of the Rez.
If all you're after is a hotspot on the go, consider that you'll have to pretty much have your Rezound remain tethered to an outlet, because the power drain will be serious.

It's all scary, but if you can follow directions, it's easy. This is a food phone to have to root for your first time, because there is not a super easy one click way. You'll be a lot more knowledgeable than say a person that rooted an original evo.

I would say take a few days, read the guides, get the things downloaded your gonna need, and do it. Youll probably need a few hours, and a xanax or 2. Start with Mr Smith's guide, then gotto the forum that can't be mentioned an read through those guides. You probably won't understand what a lot of things are, but I believe AC has an android dictionary to help with that.
If all else fails, come here and ask, we won't banish you or anything.

you can bluetooth tether using FoxFi. Not as good as wifi tether, but does not require root. If you unlock the bootloader then relock it then it will say relocked and in any event, unlocking goes through htc servers, so they will know that you were unlocked at one time.

Not unlocked. And not the only reason. I see where people end up getting longer battery life by doing it so that is a plus.

You usually get better battery life because of how devs debloat the Roms, not from being unlocked. There are all sorts of doom and gloom about warranty, but we have yet to hear about anybody getting charges for returning an unlocked phone.

Fyi, I think it was leozdad that recently unlocked and rooted, his thread can't be to far back, check out what he said before and after rooting to het a good idea of what went on.

Unrooting is just running a stock ruu, and then relocking your bootloader. After you go through the unlocking and such, all that is pretty easy and should take less time than downloading the ruu.

I would not worry about kernals much in the beginning. Are you going to jump right into ICS, or stick to Gingerbread for a while? I'm particular to the Sense4 roms myself, but if your not going to upgrade to ICS, I'd stick with Gingerbread roms until you upgrade to ICS firmware. You can run ICS Roms without upgrading, but you have to pay attention to each Devs instructions as there are additional steps.

I'm particular to these 3 devs
HTC Rezound ROM Development

[TOOL] HTC Rezound All-In-One Toolkit V2.0 [3-25-2012] [Noob-Proof] - xda-developers

Might try this tool, it seems pretty helpful.

I'm not going ICS. I've read that it's hard to go back or something of that nature. Thanks for the help man.

Also, when the upgrade is available what does that do with me being rooted

If you only root, then nothing. You should still get the ota updates. If go to a custom rom, then you most certainly will not get the ota and have to update one way or another manually.
