First, any plastic is removed from the lens and all sorts of settings have been attempted. The results are always the same: At least 80% of the shots are blurry. My friend thought maybe she wasn't using it right or some such thing, which led to...

Second, I did a bunch of side by side shots with my Nexus 5 (notoriously mediocre camera) and the Nexus 5 shots were invariably clearer, literally every single one looked better than the s5. These were taken at the same time in the same light.

So, my question is probably obvious: Are we missing some magical setting or issue that we can fix or is the camera likely broken somehow and should be replaced? I have never owned one of these or even really played with one so I don't know what to expect "normal" performance to be. But having read tons of reviews that indicated the camera is right up there (albeit a bit short of) with the iPhone 6/6+, something seems amiss. The differences between my Nexus shots and her s5 ones are not subtle. It's like night and day better on the Nexus...

You removed the plastic film from the lens, but is there any other residue left on it? Has the lens glass been thoroughly cleaned with a soft microfiber cloth?

Look closely at the camera--is there any condensation under the lens glass?

I looked very closely and could see nothing amiss. Also, it occasionally takes a shot that turns out decent. This is just rare. She's shipping it back and getting a warranty replacement. It's just unacceptably bad. The camera is basically useless. The average shot is like something a Moto G (2013) would take.

Turn off image stabilization. Takes longer to snap the shot with it on and can cause it to be blurry

I agree. Lol. I noticed it within 5 minutes of having the phone, had a message saying keep still or something to that effect. Turned it off and haven't looked back..

I had turned off stabilization and it didn't help. I also tried a different camera app and that didn't help either. The images would look fine in the viewfinder before taking the shot but after they'd come out blurry. It's weird but something had to be wrong. The replacement arrives today or tomorrow.
