Front Camera App?

Hey guys, quick question.

I am debating to get the Evo, and I have a question about the front camera app. Is it like th iPhone 4 where you can only do it Evo to Evo, or would I be able to use it on my MSN messenger with my friends on there also or would I need to use a special chat program like fring?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

So far programs like MSN and Yahoo messengers do not support video chat yet. For now the only program for video chat is Qik since skype pulled support for all other 3rd party programs like fring

So the only way to use the camera in the front for video calling is to use Qik, and that means it would have to be with someone with a Evo also? Correct?

Unfortunately yes but I'm sure it won't be long before someone makes another app similar to skype.... Or skype gives access back.

Skype is supposed to release a client for all android phones at one point but not sure if it will do video. They have it on verizon phones right now but It only does audio.

But fring will work with the front camera on the Evo correct?

Do you have the Evo? I'm still debating if I want to give up my Blackberry for the Evo :S

well dont the new samsung phones have front facing cameras? So i would think you would be able to now do samsung to evo...if qik were to make an app for those phones. Like the others said it's only a matter of time when there'll be a universal app like skype or a 3rd party app.

I gave up my berry for the Evo. I don't regret it at all. Only thing i sorta miss is BBM.

The benefit of Skype is that so many people already use it, including home PC users. I used to be able to Skype my wife (via Fring) when she was at home on the laptop and I was out with my Evo, but now we can't do that. It won't be long before there are universal options again, but it's hard waiting for something when it could really be useful.

Exactly, the BBM is the only reason I will miss it lol... and not to mention my GF uses BBM so I can catch when she's on the phone lol...

Are you satisfied with the battery?

yup I own an evo and I love it. Right now video chat on fring does not work since skype pulled support but everything else works. For how much I use my evo im ok with the battery life.

I would recommend getting an extra battery for emergencies though or if you got the money buy an extended life battery.

Yeah I think I am going to get an extra battery to carry just incase. Luckily I am usually in places where I can charge my phone (home & work), and then gym and school which I'm sure it wont' die that quick.

Also, please check your inbox! Thanks!

What is the advantage of BBM over text messaging?

Other than the occasional problem of texts not sent in real-time.

Oh, and I'm ignoring the fact that SMS requires a plan or has a cost. I'm just considering the feature. The reason why I ask this is because a friend of mine says, "I can't give up BBM" but then she texts me all the time. I don't understand why it's any easier for her to reach other friends, when texting someone functionally works out to be the same thing.

Not to derail the conversation, I don't think front-camera or no front-camera is going to be your biggest concern when moving to an Android phone from a Blackberry.

#1 - It's just a matter of time before a slew of apps will be available for video chat via your popular programs, Skype, Gchat, etc. I don't know if the iPhone front-facing camera will get the same 3rd party support from Apple/AT&T. Then again, maybe it's too early to tell.
#2 - I think on a day-to-day basis, the front-facing camera is just icing on the cake. I think you should consider your next phone more on the apps, usability, and all that jazz. It's like buying a car because the radio is cool. You should make sure you can drive it where you need to first before comparing radios.

BBM is a little different, its really hard to explain lol... but at the same time I understand where you are coming from. Thanks for your input and advice!

You can chat with any phone that has Qik or Fring. I video chat from my EVO with friends who have iphone 4's all the time.

Awesome, thanks so much! Can I ask you something, I had Fring set up a while ago whent he first iPhone came out. Obviously a lot has changed, I want to take off my AIM buddy list. How can I add/edit my buddy list on fring? Thanks!

BTW I also gave up my crackberry for the evo, and bbm is pointless

I personally love BBM.
