Froyo and rooting

Hate to sound such like a noob here. I am pretty good with phones jailbroken iphone and homebrewd and overclocked palm pre but could someone explain(just got a droid today) how to install the froyo beta build. Do i have to root before i install it or is root separate? Also what is the easiest way to root a droid running froyo or 2.1. The links in the instructions don't seem to work and i was not sure if it is a outdated post.

If you get your hands on the 'official' update package that vzw was going to push out, no, you don't have to root. Otherwise yes, you do have to root.

Easy way is to download ROM Manager from the market; at least I think it's got a 'root my device' option going on in there. I've been rooted since three days after getting mine, lol, so I don't remember any more!
