My friend got the update and when his phone loaded he now does not have 3G service. In settings it is greyed out and stating that it is turning on, however it doesn't turn on. He called Verizon tech support and they were no help. Anyone have any ideas about what to do?

How long has it been that way?
Mine didn't get 3g for the first little bit after the update. I'm not sure exactly how long because i went to sleep, but i was not able to make it happen on my own.
Did he try a *228 then option 2 to reprogram?

Same thing happened to me ...3G was unavailable for about two hours, then all of a sudden it appeared. I chalked it up to the fact that the location I was at while doing my update has a very low signal ...as soon as I entered a stronger signal area ...voila ...3G is back

I had the same thing...here's a brief story.
I updated (officially, i.e. I got the notification) and no 3G was available.
I called VZW and they said the network was down in my area, but my wife's phone was working fine...
They said just wait a while and the network will be back up..."They are working on it."
And...after a couple hours it was working again.
My theory...they know about the issue and it resolves on its own for some reason so they have a new line to feed us.

I too have this problem since froyo update. Every time I restart the phone 3g won't turn on. What I do is turn on airplane mode then turn it off and that seems to get 3g up and going. Very annoying and we shouldn't have to do this. I hope VZW realizes this and comes out with a fix.

Hmm I just noticed this on mine as well. What a pain. turned on airplane mode and turned it off and 3G came back. WTF?

My 3G doesn't go out routinely, but I use your Airplane Mode trick to fix it. I agree --- extremely annoying.

This has happened to me once with froyo. and twice with the old 2.1. I just restarted or did the airplane mode switch.
