Frustrated with CM7

So, I have been bouncing back and forth between Skyraider and CM7 for quite some time now. I like how snappy CM7 is. It's a great ROM, and themes are a nice touch. I also like some things about Skyraider.

That said, I can't stand the wifi tether on CM7. It is too splotchy. I will have perfect signal and be able to browse the internet with ease on the DINC, my ASUS Transformer (tethered to the DINC) will be timing out when trying to connect to a site. Then, a couple minutes later, all of a sudden I'll be able to load the page on the Transformer in no time at all.

Running Skyraider, I never had these problems. If my connection was good on my DINC, anything I tethered it to would connect just fine as well. If I was having any connection issues at all, I knew it had nothing to do with my wifi tether, because my DINC had poor signal as well.

I don't care about sense. I don't use it anyway. I run Go Launcher or ADW.

Another little thing I liked about Skyraider was the night mode toggle you could add to the notification pane. This was perfect for watching Netflix without having my backlit capacitive buttons glaring in my eyes. Regrettably I don't see that function anywhere in CM7.

What I am looking for: A stable ROM, with or without sense, that has no tethering issues. I am primarily going to use my DINC as a hotspot for my Transformer, so that last one is a MUST. I would like it to be fairly snappy, but I know that I am on aging hardware here, so I am not expecting too much. That night mode toggle would be nice, too.

Any suggestions?

If you want a way to turn off the backlight on the buttons, it's possible via CM Settings, but it's not as simple as 1 toggle or press

I, too, went back and forth between Skyraider, Nils 3.0, and CM7 until I decided to try MIUI (I'm on the 12.9 build). I absolutely dig MIUI and all of it's customization and the tether works outstanding and I've noticed it doesn't kill my battery as fast as tethering with CM7 or a Sense ROM - don't know why, maybe that's just me.

How? I've been trying to find the way but must be missing it.

Edit: Nevermind, I figured it out.

Use the 12.09 build of MIUI - the newer ones are having some 3G problems.

I've used MIUI and liked it, but starting in October, the updates started to have issues that never seemed to get fixed so I started looking for something new. I've settled on Jermain's Senseless Rom based on the 4.08 OTA. It is AWESOME. It runs smooth and fast, and battery life is incredible. Senseless roms are based off Sense, but most of the Sense UI is removed. All of the Sense widgets are gone, but what I gain in speed and battery life are incredible. I can make it through a whole day (6 am to 9 pm or longer) with pretty moderate to heavy use with the stock battery.

Sorry for the totally newbie question here (longtime Android user, new ROM flasher), but where are you all finding these different ROMs? I just have the free version of ROM Manager. Are they only in the paid?

What about the different kernels? I have CM 7.1.0 installed, but I guess the stock kernel because I wasn't given a choice like I thought I would.

That's the main place all the ROMs and kernels are posted but there are other forums like TeamBAMF and Rootzwiki

Try the ROMS and MODS HQ. Its the second stickey down on this forum.

Well I've been playing with MIUI all day, and so far I like it. I have version 1.12.9, and haven't had any issues yet. Kinda miss having an app drawer, so I might throw a launcher on it. We'll see.

Tethering seems to work just fine so far as well. Digging around for a night mode toggle, though. Doesn't seem to be one.

I use ADW launcher because I can't stand not having an app drawer either. Glad its working for you.
