Frustrating - Cannot Put Widgets on Screen

I've got a frustrating problem: I tried to put some widgets on my screen and can't do it. I tap "Apps", select "Widgets", then tap and hold the widget, then drag the widget to the part of the screen I want it on and release. The program opens after I release the widget but the widget does not stay on the screen. Can't figure out what the problem is. Running Android 4.1.1

Thanks for responding. There were a few widgets that I've been trying to put on different screens such as "People", "DropBox", and some others. I just tried to again, not thinking that it would work, but now it functions properly. I cannot explain why now I can add the widgets but could not before. As long as it is now working, I can't complain.

Yep, that's technology. Here I was with a phone acting like it had Windows.
