Ok so I went on a quest last night to root my wife's 8gb NT. As it turns out they made some changes to the 8gb tab that makes it harder to root. I found this thread on XDA where this guy Jichuan achieved full root. I dropped him a few bucks for his work because I believe he has the only way that works right now. Be grateful for the geeks who live off this stuff to make our gadgets better!

Root for Nook Tablet 8GB (w/ Android Market) - xda-developers

I went with option one since it's easiest and it worked like a charm. Just make sure your read the entire thread to get an idea of the problems some people are having. I got mine fully rooted with google market but couldn't get it to install third party apps and you really need Homecatcher.apk in order to get your "n" home button to take you to your alternate launcher. Finally figured out that "NT Hidden Setting" (in the market) has a built in hack for loading unknown sources apps plus has a hack to block OTA's.

If you have an 8gb NT, this is the way to go as the 16gb procedure will not work.

STICKY? MAYBE?

Congrats. I am glad you were able to get everything taken care of. Rooting really unlocks the true power of these great little tablets.

Welcome to the club!

I am not able to unzip the jichuan image file without an error. I have used 7zip and fyzip. Any tips?

It's not a zip file. It's an img file. You will need an img writer like win32disk imager.

Here's a link to download it.

Use this program to create your boot sd. Be aware it will erase all data from that card so make sure you back up anything you need on that card. It's probably a good idea to use a small SD card that you can set aside use as a permanent boot card for later use.

Take the time to watch the step by step videos he's provided.

After you create your boot sd, continue on with the instructions.

Haha thanks got it figured out! It still won't work though. I did it all and when I put the card in my nook and turned it on a box came on the screen. I followed the instructions and after turning it off, removing the card, and turning it back on, there was no change! I will try again soon but must have done something wrong.

You did it right. As long as you waited the two minutes after it said read forever. From the home screen hit your n button, click on search, then search for market. You should sees the Android market.

Wow thanks! I would have never thought of doing that and you are right it is there! Thanks so much! This was simpler in the end than when I rooted my 16gb tablet!

Make sure you download home catcher and home switcher so you can set your n button to your alternate launcher and then go back and forth between the nook and your alternate launcher.

Oh yes I am fining that I need to now. I can only get to the apps I downloaded by searching for them! I use the 16gb and have honeycomb on it but my mom just purchased this one and wanted hers done and it through me for a loop trying to figure it out!

Ok so I can't get the home catcher to install properly! I have go launcher pro on there and downloaded an app installer but I can't get it to work!

Define won't work. What happens when you try to install it? Have you downloaded "NT hidden settings" and enabled the unknown sources hack?

When I try to use the app installer it says can't install and to archive and unarchive and try again. I did the nt hidden settings. When I was putting the home catcher apk on sd card I just copied and pasted. Should I have done it differently?

I never did get it to work! I just push search and then Honeycomb Launcher and once I do that I can do it. I don't like the extra step but it is better than a factory nook!

this is where i am stuck i get the profram and try to burn it an it gets like 10 persent and failes with error 1117 and says something oI with device... can any one please help

Newbie first post here.
Bought the Nook Tablet this AM based on it's specs. Totally let down with regards to apps. This thing totally sucks. So I'm not new to rooting (been doing it since my OG Droid), but I'm having no luck with this root procedure. What am I doing wrong?

My procedure:
Format 4GB chip
Extract image file to chip,
press power and n button simultaneously. Intro screen comes up then blank. When I try to boot is asks me if I want to do a factory reset.

Can anyone help? I'm wondering if I am not creating a bootable chip?
Thanks,

M

how do you get homecatcher to install??

i keep getting the same error as above "please archive then unarchive"
