future updates

I am still trying to get the sideloading update from ATT for my HTC Inspire. I have talked to them a few times and they are pushing me the update every time, but nothing ever happens. Now I am on a list to get it.

I have several Amazon apps I want to put on it. If I root and put the apps on it can I unroot the phone and still get future updates from HTC and ATT? I really want some of the paid apps I got for free from Amazon and ATT doesn't seem like they are going to have it fixed for me soon. Or are there really any future updates from HTC that I should worry about?

Even if you are using the stock rom, if you are rooted, you won't be able to install any updates from HTC or AT&T. But that doesn't, mean you can't get them. Most devs will update their roms or if it is a major upgrade, you will see new roms pop up. All you would need to do is flash one of these.

I just want to be able to install the Amazon stuff. I already hide all the att apps using Launcher (not a fan of sense UI) so not a big deal there. I have read that it runs faster after being rooted, but also that there are speaker problems.

I just don't want to open up a can of worms and be messing with it all the time. Also hoping to get gingerbread sometime.

david - - youre not alone on trying to get the thrid party application update from att bud. ive been trying to get it since june 10th.

Im just about convinced it would be easier to find a pink unicorn with a winning 200milion power ball lottery ticket stuck on its horn than it would be to get this update from att.

some have had great success. Im about to blow my cool personally. my phone works fine other than this update. if htey make something available, it shouldnt take 4 acts of congress, 2 somali warlords and a couple of gnomes to make this happen. But it seems thats exactly what it'll take.

good luck my friend.

Before rooting, I would try using SuperOneClick to enable installing from unknown sources. That is what I did. It should work and doesn't break anything. You won't see the option in the settings menu, but it is permanently enabled.

I thought the super one click is the one that breaks mms?

Have you not experienced that?

The work around that breaks mms is the one where you go in and clear the data of some settings on the phone. I think specifically clearing the data under provider settings. SOC enables sideloading, but it doesn't show up in the settings menu because of this, it doesn't alter the provider settings.
