FYI: don't remove the Google Voice app yet (carrier Voice Mail)

I learned the hard way. It will switch the phone setting for voicemail back to your carrier. I think it is still needed even if you are using the new hangouts.

You can configure your phone to use Google voice as voicemails and never have the Google voice app installed. I've done that for several years.

As soon as I uninstall the app the only option I have for voice mail is my carrier.

I have never had the GV app installed and I get my VM in hangouts no problem...
