After doing a bit of reading, I am unclear as to whether or not the G2x supports At&t 3G bands.

Apparently according to the FCC, the G2x (P999) passed through the FCC with bands compatible with At&t's 3g network (LG P999 Passes FCC, is T-Mobile's G2x?)

But then I've been reading on the forums that it doesn't support it:
"The T-Mobile G2x fact sheet, attached [PDF link], contains accurate information. The T-Mobile website is incorrect and we?re working to correct it. The G2x supports 850/900/1800/1900 MHz for 2G/GPRS only, and supports 3G/4G UMTS/HSPA+ bands I and IV. The G2x does not support AT&T?s 3G bands. This banding is hardware based."

Perhaps the phone has the hardware capabilities to support both carriers, but it is currently locked down by software?

I want to know because of the pending decision of the merger.

The merger decision is not pending. It is at least a year away, and we're at least two years away from any substantive changes to either network.

The G2X has a quad band radio. It is software-locked to prevent use of AT&T's 3G bands, and will likely stay that way forever.

Let me rephrase...the approval is pending. The decision needs approval from the government (FCC) and other lawmakers.

So lets say the unfortunate merger happens, do you think it is at all possible that At&t(t-mobile) will unlock those bands?

It depends. I would say probably not. What will probably happen is that the bulk of G2x owners will be eligible for an upgrade by then, and any that aren't will get a free early upgrade if they want.

We don't need to continue this conversation here. There are already threads devoted to this topic.

Thanks
