Galaxy Nexus from O2 in the UK?

I have family in the UK that is willing to sign a new contract with O2, and get me a Galaxy Nexus. I'd just have to pay for the phone, as they are content with their current iphones.

If I were to do this, I've read that you can just submit a form to O2 and they will email you an unlock code, or something along those lines, to unlock your phone. Once it is unlocked, can they send the phone to me in America to be activated on AT&T?

What would/wouldn't work on the phone?
