So I ordered a One X with the mind that I would sell it or use it. I am on a family plan with a couple contracts and felt I might as well use this one up now so they will all end sooner and perhaps I can get the family off AT&T. In any case, it didn't make sense to me to just sit with the upgrade. So I decided that if I didn't like the One X more than the gnex, I would sell it to subsidize the Gnex.
I checked out the One X today at a ATT store. I was shocked at how nice it was on the outside. Looks much more quality like in real life than photos. The screen is definitely nicer than the Gnex, not mindblowingly better though. Particularly the whites are so much whiter and the screen is slightly less grainy. But I did compare the two on maximum brightness, so maybe the One X is just brighter which helped. But I must say, the Gnex screen is still very nice and the Gnex's blacks are as black as they can get.
I then turned it on and all that initial excitement with the hardware was overshadowed completely by the Sense UI. It just totally didn't do it for me. I am not saying it is worse, but from my subjective point of view, it just felt kind of like...."whats the point"? I had heard about how much lighter this was than the old sense, but to be honest, it is not nearly light enough. It particularly bothered me how they couldn't even leave the phone and contacts apps alone. It feels like they are trying to be more consistent with older design styles.
This experience showed me how important software really is. Not just features. I am sure that sense can do everything and more than stock, but if the experience just doesn't feel nice than its not worth it for me. I love the minimalism of stock. I was considering just putting CM9 on there but I am not sure if I feel like dealing with that. I did it on an HP touchpad, and it worked great but I am not sure if I feel like messing with it on the phone. Plus I would only do that after many months, when I felt that I would not need to ever use the warranty. Also the locked bootloader makes things sound more complicated. On top of that, I need my phone unlocked for use in other countries and I want to use tethering which would also require me to unlock/root. So I've decided to try and sell it and get another GNex. My other Gnex I gave to my mom who lost her iphone. And amazingly, shes loving it and she by no means finds computers easy and all that. It would of been a lot to expect her to learn to customize the homescreens, so I did that and how she has eveyrthing she needs right in front of her.
Anyways, I hope HTC makes the next nexus because it is so damn nice. Much nicer even than the lumia 900(I was surprised) which I saw as well. I was actually disappointed by that. It seemed bulky and just not as nice as in the photos. Although I'm sure the smaller N9 looks amazing.
