I've used an HTC Droid Incredible and a Moto Razr. Both of these phones had a widget that allowed me to have my favorite contacts easily accessible on one of my home screens. I tap the icon for the person I want to call and it dials automatically. Very helpful when in the car.

Does Samsung have a similar app/widget? Trying to set up my Note 3 today and have not been able to find it. I see one for adding one user at a time but not exactly the one I am looking for. If one does not exist then I will need to find one in the App Store.

While not a "grid" of favorites contacts, look for the following widgets to make your own.

  • Contact 1X1
  • Direct Dial 1X1
  • Direct Message 1X1

Pick a screen or space on a screen and drop one widget for each contact you want.

This is what I currently have set up. On my last 2 phones I always used the 3x4 below the favorites grid for other apps/widgets. Fortunately, Samsung lets me add an additional home screen.

I thought I found one called "favorite contacts widget free" in the play store. Only problem is it's limited to 4x1 and 4x2. Will not drag down to show the rest of my favorites.

There was a good one on the galaxy s3, they took it away for some reason

I fully undestand your problem....I have just upgraded from a galaxy Note 2....which had a super contacts grid, which worked the way you described....for some reason Samsung have got rid of it on the Note 3 for the useless individual contact thing. Now I am scouring the web trying to find something similar to the old one.

You may use
From screen add menu(touch long on screen)
Shortcut>direct call

Note III / Tapatalk app

Seems like adding them one at a time will do the same thing as the old large grid. My guess is that's why Sammy got rid of it, but who knows.

What I do is simply make a homescreen folder full of Direct Dial widgets. So I tap the folder to see all of my Direct Dials show up, then tap one of them to make the call. I can organize them in the folder any way I want. Pretty straightforward.

I started to do this, but realized I don't have enough friends :) (that I call that often).

I just have not even 2 rows of direct dial contacts (albeit with Nova compressing/adding rows/columns).

I searched for a while for apps to do this and I settled on Android Pro Widgets.

It has several different widgets including People, Calendar, Facebook, etc. The People widget displays a nice, full-screen grid of your contact photos which is also scrollable. You can choose what groups of contacts to display. I have mine set to display my Favorites group which consists of friends and family. I would post a screen shot but I doubt they would like that.

You can choose from different options of actions when you tap on the photos. For example when I choose my wife I get a quick pop-up with large options to: call Home, call Mobile, send Text, or send Email. You can also set it to do a default action when you tap the photo, such as directly call a contact's Mobile number.

This is all with the free version, they have a paid version with even more options. And of course on the Note 3 everything is very quick and the photos are nice and big. I tried several other photo contacts widget apps but the photos were too small.

I use car widget in conjunction with direct dial. I fill up one of my home screens with it
