Galaxy S3: 4.3 Notifications not working

After upgrading to 4.3, I was pleased to find you can mark e-mail read from the notification bar.

For some reason, this suddenly stopped working, and reverted to the old style without the extra options. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Are you using the stock Email app or the Gmail app (or some 3rd party app)?
