Galaxy S3 - Home button

I previously used the leaked 4.2.1 OS and whenever I pressed the home button (once the screen turned off) it would light up the screen but it wouldn't close any open apps. I reverted to the Samsung official 4.1.2 and now when I press the home (once the screen is dark) button it closes any open apps and goes to my home screen. This is incredibly annoying particularly when I'm in the middle of a messaging conversation as it closes the app and I have to re-open. I am using Nova Launcher (paid version).

Is there a setting where I can just light up the home screen (without pressing the side button - which too is annoying) and not have it close open apps?

Any tips?

Ta.

The Home button is not really closing the app, just putting it in the background for multitasking. When this happens long press the Home button again will bring up the Task Manager and you can tap the app you were using and be back at what you were doing.

Are you using a lock screen? My Verizon (4.1.2, MF1) phone behaves the correct way.
Do you have S Voice enabled?

That's all fine and dandy however not my issue. I simply want the home button to light up the screen.

My lock screen kicks in after 30 seconds. However my screen goes off after 15. So, during that period I want the home button to light up the screen and keep anything open on display and not minimise it to the background.

I'll go one step further, even when the screen is locked and say a WhatsApp popup notification appears if I press the home button the popup goes away and I need to then unlock and go to the app in order to respond. It used to light up the screen and not minimise any open apps so I know it's doable.

Good gosh, I can't stress how annoying this is!! Any help is much appreciated.

I fixed this by upgrading to CyanogenMod 10.1. It has changed my life and is quite simply AWESOME!

I highly recommend making the switch. For the reticent, if you follow the (rather simple) instructions, you won't brick your phone.
