Galaxy S4 - disappearing pictures in gallery

I have had the galaxy s4 for a couple of weeks now and im loving it. Although I seem to have a problem with pictures disappearing from the stock gallery app. They are replaced with a black pic of a head silhouette with a lightning bolt through it.

Strangely the pics still show up on all files however when I open it they arent there. Saving them to the sd card. Concidentally they show up ok in 3rd party apps like fish bowl.

Is thid common? If so any solutions? Ta

Are these pictures taken with the camera or loaded through other media?

They are taken with the camera. The pictures will display for half a second and then disappear.

I had the same issue with my pictures disappearing from the gallery. I installed the Google camera app and use that instead of the Samsung. It didn't bring my pictures back but the problem has not happened again. I also save all pictures and videos to Google+ so they aren't lost just not in my gallery.
