Galaxy S5 Headphone Compatibility?

Hey guys,

I originally got my S5 in August of last year (2014), and I've loved it ever since. However, just under 3 months later, I experienced a problem with the headphone jack of my phone. For some reason, the jack would no longer 'bite' when I plugged in headphones - no longer holding them in place. I took my phone to my local Samsung repair centre, and they charged me £50 to replace the entire outer housing (frame) of the phone, as apparently a part of the connection from a pair of my headphones had broken off inside the jack. I was told that this repair would have a two year warranty etc, and that if I had any further issues with it, I should take it back and they'd repair it. Cool.

Now, I have a different issue, but with the same component. Intermittently, the phone thinks that a pair of headphones are connected, when nothing is connected - meaning that at these times, I can't use the built-in speaker. Thinking that this could possibly be a software issue, I decided I'd do a full system restore on the phone - but to no avail. Has anyone had this problem?

I went back to the repair centre today, and they said that using headphones that weren't the original pair provided with the phone would cause the headphone jack to break, as they aren't compatible. I found this concept a little bewildering, as the use of the 3.5mm headphone connection is a universal convention, and should not cause any problems - especially using a pair of expensive AKGs. Can anyone shine any light on this idea too?

Thanks! :)

Ask them which male bovine this came out of the back end of. I've been in the electronics industry longer than most (and I'd bet all) of the employees in that store, have an electronics degree (granted, from the days we studied vacuum tubes [valves to you]) and designed more hardware than the total number of cellphone they have in that store, and I'm not bewildered in the least. It's his way of saying "we don't do repairs for free, even if we told you that we would - we're dishonest thieves".

The original repair required a new jack, not a new frame (which would have cost you a LOT less). The current repair requires the same thing - a new jack. (The differences in tolerances between all the headphone plugs Samsung uses for the S5 are about the same as the differences in tolerances for all the 3.5mm plugs made in the world at all times.) About the only way the plug could have cause the problem is if you jammed it into the jack at an angle. They owe you a free new jack, replaced for free - at the very least. A written apology from the head of the corporation for hiring morons, and a few pounds for your trouble, wouldn't be out of line.

Do barristers over there like to take on large corporations, just for the thrill of being on the front page? (Over here - the other side of the pond - an attorney's letter to the store would probably result in a new phone, just so you'd forget any ideas you had about having them indicted for larceny by fraud. But maybe we, as a nation, are more litigious than you are.)

Oh, and send them a bill for bovine excrement removal - about 10 tonnes worth.

What those techs told you was untrue. I use a $10 pair of earphones from Walmart on my phone all the time and they work fine. Why did they replace the outer part if the phone and not replace the Jack?
