My phone prompts a message saying that it is over heating and turns off 30 seconds after turning on the phone. It is obviously not actually overheating because it has been off for days. It used so I don't have warranty on it. Any ideas?

Sounds like the phone is damaged. Maybe a local repair shop can help to fix it for you?

I don't know if it will work every time or not but mine was overheating to the point that it would almost burn you and when it was hot I would have to delete text messages or they would just keep sending. A couple days ago I got aggravated and did a factory reset on my phone and it hasn't gotten hot at all since the reset.

Turn off your Galaxy S6
Press and hold down the Power, Volume up and the Home buttons together.
After the beautiful Samsung logo appears you should see a blue recovery text at the top.
Use the Volume up and down keys to scroll in the Recovery menu.
Mark the entry “Wipe cache partition” and start it with the Power button.
This process will usually take some seconds and the previously display menu will appear, after it finished.
Finish the process with “Reboot system now” and you done

try this!
