Galaxy S6 - Unlocked SM-G920F - OTA Update in North America?

Hi there, I'm in the USA with a Galaxy S6 G920F unlocked model and it's working great. However, the 5.1 update has not been pushed to my phone. However, I'm reading that the international unlocked models have gotten the update for the last week or two. I've been checking regularly, but it still shows the latest updates are already installed.

How do OTA updates normally work when you have a phone from a different region but is unlocked? I'm using the phone with an AT&T sim, but I thought the updates still came directly from Samsung with unlocked versions? Is it just a matter of the update being rolled out still, or will I have to update my phone manually? I've tried Smart Switch and it is not showing an update there either. I don't really want to use ODIN and update manually with a file I'm not sure is for my exact model.

Suggestions? Just wait? Try something else? Would I be okay if I flashed the first 5.1 update that came out (French version) via ODIN?

I have a T-Mobile S6 edge so I have the 5.1.1 for about a month now, after I got my S6 3 weeks ago, Unlocked SM-G920i I thought that the update was going to be waiting for me there but nothing, after 3 weeks checking daily, I gave up.

My phone is Unlocked but came with an Australian Firmware (XSA) problem is that if the update is not pushed to that region, you won't get the OTA. For the SM-G920F and G925F the first region that received the update was France and then UK and other regions, your CSC (region) is not even showing up in Sammobile, plus all the regions with your same PDA (G920FXXU1AOCV) seems to be stuck at 5.0.2 at the moment, so that is never good news for this or any future OTA.

So, what did I do? I made a couple of backups on Smart Switch and Helium and Flashed the Indian version that was the first version that was released for the SM-G920i, also, yesterday, a co-worker that has a Green Emerald SM-G925f also had the same issue, his region was one of the few that are still waiting for the update, so he asked me to flash to his device the UK firmware, both of our phones are working as expected.

Remember, you are flashing official Samsung Firmwares, so it won't trip Knox or break anything, only thing you need to be sure is to download the correct firmware version for your Device Model, so any firmware for a SM-G920F should work fine for you. If you don't want to be doing a full setup from scratch again, then your only option is to wait for the OTA, but if you don't mind, then go ahead. Just be sure to select a region that you think will be the first or one the first that will get future updates, because from that moment on, your phone region will change accordingly. Look here.

**Note** - If you are going to flash the Rom, be sure you haven't activated the Reactivation Lock option on the FindMyMobile Security Feature, if you have it, turn it off before you do all this, if not, your CSC won't change and you will have Multiple CSC, maybe no harm at all, but don't take chances. Do a Wipe Data/Full reset before the flash, then after the flash, before you do anything, just go back to recovery mode and do a Wipe cache partition and Wipe Data/Full reset, then set your stuff.

You don't really have to Erase before, I always do that for old habits, that was suggested with previous versions and basically when flashing other roms, but is not definitely a must. If you want to try without erasing first, maybe, and I repeat, maybe it can even update and change the region without you losing your data, as some people has mentioned over XDA, but I really doubt it because if you do a full flash it will change your CSC (Region) and as far as I know, by doing that it will do a factory reset. But again, if there are people saying that they haven't lose any data flashing other region firmware, then we may assume that it may be possible.

One thing though, if after the flash you see that it did the factory reset, don't wait after that and do the Wipe cache partition and wipe data/factory reset. If it doesn't wipe your data, take a chance and just do the Wipe cache partition and see if by doing that it changes the CSC code (you can see that in the Recovery menu), if it does all that for you, then you are one lucky guy. If not then do the factory reset because you will have a Firmware from one region and the CSC showing possibly Multiple CSC codes and it may cause some issues in the long run with future OTA updates.

I finally got around to doing this tonight! I downloaded the France 5.1.1 update (which I believe was the first to come out) and used ODIN to flash it to my GS6. It worked on the first try and it automatically rebooted my phone when it was done flashing. During the reboot, it did the "Android is upgrading" to all of my apps. After the phone booted, I verified that it was 5.1.1.

I rebooted to Recovery to check the CSC and at the bottom it said something about Multi CSC but it didn't show a number or code. So I rebooted back into Android and went to the dialer to check the CSC by dialing *#1234# and it failed (it said something about a connection problem or something). I verified that both calls and data were both working, however.

Just to be safe, I went back into Recovery and did a factory reset. After that, I booted fresh into Android and tried the *#1234# again and it still failed with "Connection problem or invalid MMI code". But like I said, calls and data are both working. But something must not be right???

In recovery, this is what I see at the bottom:

Nothing can fix the dreadful battery life on this phone, I'm afraid. It's really my only issue with the phone. Honestly, I'm not noticing any difference in battery life, though the phone does feel a little snappier. I think that's mainly due to the factory reset though, not the 5.1 update.

Hello All, I just came across this post and it answered some of the similar questions I have had for sometime. I also have an international version SM-G920F. Here are the codes it shows:

AP G920FxxU3COJ1
CP/PDA G920FXXU3COI9
CSC G920FVIR3COJ1

The thing is, it's a UK region phone and I am planning to use internationally as I travel, but I live in the USA. The marshmallow update is coming soon, but I'm not sure how (OR IF) I'll receive it. My assumption is that I will NOT get by OTA because my phone is reporting it's a UK version phone.
Based on what I saw above, maybe the best way would be to find the USA version of the 5.1.1 firmware for this model (does that exist?), and restore it, then if my region on the phone changes to USA, the phone will then download automatically the 6.0.1 update when it's available here? Does this sound like the right approach? Or is there anything else I am not taking into account?

Right now I have a G920i, can I upgrade it to 6.0.1 without messing up my chance of ever using Samsung pay?

All, OK so here's the way it worked for me... As stated above, I have an SM-G920F. It was originally flashed with the UK version 5.1.1. I downloaded the 6.0.1 France Version here: sammobile (dot) com/firmwares/download/65754/G920FXXU3DPAD_G920FOXA3DPAE_XEF/

1. First I did disconnected the find my mobile and remote lock and wipe functions.
2. Shut down phone and restart in maintenance mode: hold home, volume up, and power buttons. When the Android guy appears, wait
until the options appear. Use volume buttons to go down to delete cache option and then press power button to confirm the operation. Reboot
3. Next, I fired up SmartSwitch by Samsung and did a settings and data backup.
4. Put phone into download mode: hold home, volume down, and power buttons.
5. Now run Odin on my PC version 10.3.7 and followed the instructions on the firmware download page link above.

Worked like a charm... the phone updated, rebooted and saved all previous settings and chats, etc. Could not have been easier. the phone is much faster, more snappy, responsive.

I have the SM-G920I. This thing hasn't be receiving updates for a very long time. Guess I have to look around for ways to update.... ARGH!
