The sensor shoots in 4:3Coming from an S6, I found it odd while playing with a demo S8 that Samsung has the camera back defaulting to 4:3 aspect images. Did the S7 do this, too? We get an extra tall/wide aspect phone in the S8, but go back to old school 4:3 aspect images? Seems an odd choice to me anyways. To get the full 12MP, you have to be in 4:3 mode. Switching to widescreen/16:9 images, dropped it back to 9MP.
if this is true, well it's a good improvement then!
