When I plug it into the tab the top left of the screen says "usb connector connected" but it does not seem to charge? Any ideas

The cable in your link is an OTG cable, data only. It's for connecting a thumb drive or HDD.

I'm using the charging arm which is basically a really short extension cable with a right angle connector thst came with the Ibolt dock I have for my Note 2. They don't list it separately on the site anywhere but I know you can call them and they will sell you one. Its like 10 bucks but has the ability to enable car mode which admittedly isn't much on Samsung, basically just some extra quick links in the drop down but it is handy since its things like maps and gps programs you may have installed.
