GB Roms and Related info

I'm currently running RubiX Focused 2.0.1 which is based on Froyo 2.2.1. This ROM is older and no longer supported, but runs very well and quite fast. It also has all features working.

I have been considering upgrading to a GB based ROM and want to know if its worth it. I don't want to run CM7 until its closer to a stable build because I want a full featured phone. I'm open to suggestions, but I have been looking at Sensei-Mod .602 GB v2 as a possible replacement for my Froyo ROM. This appears to be tweaked for performance and bloatware removed. It also has been described as very quick and good on battery life.

In a stock to stock comparison, what type of things were improved between Froyo vs. GB? Things like performance, battery management, radio improvement?

I have been using my current setup for sometime now, and I don't want to change something that works very well unless its going to be a step in the right direction. If its an honest upgrade, then I'll consider going through all the trouble.

What do you guys think? Would you replace your working custom Froyo ROM for a custom GB ROM just because its newer? Or is a GB that much better?

The net effect for the end user is better battery life and slightly faster, but I think the delta from Eclair to Froyo was probably bigger. I think in-app payments may also be limited to GB, but I'm not sure about that (I don't tend to use them, myself).

Frankly, until I start seeing apps released on GB and higher instead of today's Froyo and higher I don't really care much. However, if you want to play with something different there's plenty to choose from. So far there hasn't been a killer GB app for me but that will eventually change.

The only thing I really don't like is that Froyo has bigger security holes (like a third party app being able to nab root access), but most of this is mitigated by just being intelligent about what you install.

Thanks for the great reply, I'm still looking into different ROM's to see if anything entices me over to GB. I just hate the thought of going through and setting up all my settings and applications on a new ROM.

If you are not a flashoholic or just retired like me , well... I was good on Darkslide4.2 Froyo and better on DSX GB for@ least 2 mths then i got bored cuz nothing was broken. Tried a few others but they just didn't have it together like DSX at the time I left DSX. So I haven't been stable stable again since 8/28.

I have Cm7XGB kernal602 or what not running since and I'm happy. Had a couple speedbumps but they were quick to deal with and I'm good.

Glad to see the CM7GB kernel is going well, they try to dissuade non-dev users to the point where I figured it was mostly unusable.

To the OP, I just remembered that I do have a GB-only app I like - Google Talk with Video can be hacked to run on a GB-based ROM but apparently not a Froyo-based one. I don't know if that's enough to entice you to migrate your settings over (I know how much of a pain that can be even with a good backup).

I do believe that to be true, Im going to get my laptop out here soon and give it a try.

An update to my OP, I decided to take the leap into a GB based rom. I SBF'd to a stock .602, then used the one click root, and installed Shuji 2.2.

Many people have stated that the battery life in this ROM is very good, and bug free for the most part. Sounded right up my alley.

So far so good, it seems like everything is working as it should. I have noticed that the camera is a POS, and I'm going to look into trying to get the stock blur camera back that I had previously installed on my RubiX ROM.

I agree with the camera comment, I have been using Vignette since last year but its slow as hell on CM GB. The fastest I 've seen it was on SSX2.2 but it had other issues that steered me away from that ROM at launch. Let us know if you get blur working.

Ya, i got the blur camera to work just fine. I have not tested the video yet, but it takes pictures great. In my last ROM when I was using RubiX Focused 2.0.1 it had this same camera problem. It must be the vanilla camera from the OG droid days or something. I also installed the blur camera on that ROM as well.

I just downloaded the Zip to my SD card, and flashed it as an update in clockwork recovery, rebooted the phone and I had the good camera back. I personally like the "widescreen" setting. its not full 8mp pictures, but I like the picture quality of the widescreen appearance.

Well with SSM-602 v.3 getting updated tonight, and after reading that location services and tweetdeck were both fixed, I decided to jump ship and install the newer ROM. Man am I glad I did, this thing is awesome. I haven't found anything wrong with it yet.

There are rom called VorteX that runs on GB. 602 as well that's got great battery life

Not in the ROM itself, it only has the option to set different stock values. The nice part about the ROM is that it limits the phone to the lowest setting when the screens off, and under volts the phone to save on battery. I use SetCPU to do this still out of habit but the ROM has the option built in.

But if your looking to actually overclock your phone, then you will need another program. I have 2 recommendations that I have used.

Both have the ability to "Overclock" your device, as well as under volt it to save battery. Personally I like the functions in the Quick Clock Advanced better, as you have more control over the total difference.

Example - In Jrummy16's app, you can set your highest clock higher, but at the cost of the lowest clock being raised as well. Where as with Quick clock advanced, you can set up all 4 of your clock speeds, and manage the VSEL's better.

I currently have my phone overclocked and under volted, at the top is 1.2 gHZ and the lowest is 300mHZ at 15VSEL. If I used Jrummy16's app to set my max at 1.2ghz it then pre-sets the lowest at 400mhz. And you cant change or adjust that lower setting or your voltage in Android Overclocker.

Also something to note, the Quick Clock Advanced has a calibration option that will give you an approximate max and min that you can set your phone to by testing the device. I normally test my phone from time to time and never go above the recommended speed.

Just be careful when doing these type of changes, and don't start off going as high as you can, your liable to damage your phone. Not all phones take to overclocking the same.

I remember when I was first getting into modding and overclocking, there were a few videos our there that helped me learn how to do it correctly, and how to do it safely.

So after thinking about your question more, I figured out that there is indeed a way to OC inside the ROM that I was not aware of. It appears that you have to use some of the scripts that are built into the ROM via the terminal emulator.

Here is the Dev's thread about his scripts and how to access them.

Honestly it seems pretty straight forward, but I still like using the other 2 apps I told you about. I may decide to read up some more on the pre-installed scripts and try them out.

Well, after reading all 21 pages on the Rootzwiki page about the mods and scripts, and playing around with them for most the night, I can say I'm overclocked and undervolted now and any other apps I had installed to OC are uninstalled.

Its not the easiest process to run the scripts, but its not bad once you understand how they work.
