Gear S2 and WiFi question

I have the Gear S2 AT&T 3g/4g model. I do not use the 3g/4g feature and don't have a plan or phone number for my watch. I use it with Bluetooth only.

I am confused about the WiFi feature of my watch. I can find very little information about it. It is my understanding that if Bluetooth is turned off, or out of range that you can use Wifi (assuming you have activated that feature on the watch). But what exactly does using WiFi mean?? Does it mean that I can still get notifications on my watch even if I am out of Bluetooth range of my phone? Or phone calls? What can WiFi do for me on my watch if I don't have a 3g/4g plan?

To my knowledge there isn't much you can do over wifi on the S2. U won't receive notifications or anything, but there are just a handful(maybe less) of thing that are accessible. For instance, I know that if I leave my watch at home I can lock it remotely from my phone when I'm at work as long as it's connected to my home wifi.
