Is there a way to root and install custom recovery on this thing?
Im nowhere near new to Android, but very new to the nook..
What all can I customize on this thing? Can I even use Android Market?

More info the better :)

Nook Tablet has a locked bootloader. See threads below to find a root script. Then you can add Android market. They just came out with an upgrade to 1.4.1 that is downloaded OTA and disables sideloading. There is a workaround for this but it requires a reset back to 1.4.0.
Right now, I've enabled the switch to allow 3rd party downloads and have the Kindle App a nd the Amazon App store plus many apps i've installed through Amazon App store. I'm not rooted.
Thinking about returning the Nook Tablet for a refund before Jan 31st when the holiday return policy ends unless the developers can come up with some patches to restore sideloading. This tablet may be a dead end as all the new ones released will have the 1.4.1 update on it and with this update the bootloader is blocked and sideloading is blocked by B&N. Only good for B&N content.

Best action right now is to check to see what version of software is installed. IF it's 1.4, then shut off your WiFi until you're ready to root and run the script to block updates. Then you can sideload from the Android Market. My big problem is if this device is locked down tight by B&N then the devs will abandon the product and it will be a dead end in the Android device market. Too bad as the hardware specs are great and the capabilities of the unit are full of possibilities.
