Get a Nexus 5 now?

Hello all I am currently a happy 1st Gen Moto X user on Sprint.

For various reasons I am locked into sprint for the next 18 months.

I love my Moto X with its essentially clean android interface. It has many good months left, but probably not 18 months. Ideally it's replacement would be the 2nd Gen Moto X but Motorola and sprint for reasons unknown to me have decided to not allow me that opportunity. However that is a discussion for another forum.

Even though I would miss some of the Moto X functions I think I would be happy with a Nexus for that clean android interface. I am strongly considering going ahead and getting a Nexus 5 even though it will probably sit in its box for a few months for a couple of reasons:

1. The new nexus might be phablet size and I have no interest in a 6 inch phone.

2. There is no guarantee that the new nexus will support sprint.

3. Once the new nexus goes on sale there is a good chance the 5 will be halted.

What do you guys think of my reasoning?

For those of you who are on Sprint is the 5 still working fine on their network? Any spark problems?

Oh and please don't tell me to switch to t-mobile. Not going to happen and that's not up for debate.

I can only say I got a nexus 5 a couple months ago when my z10 died. I can report it is a great device. I'm not looking to get a nexus 6 at this point. But I am looking to get a 32 GB nexus 5 i could only get a16 GB version. Its an amazing device. I can only recommend it. I'm on T-Mobile by the way.

I guess my main concern is that once the Nexus 6 launches a "pure" android device will no longer be available on sprint.

you, like myself, am contracted to sprint well into 2015;

I'm with a 16gb nexus 5 now & reading your post & others, I'm seriously contemplating buying a 32gb back-up, just in case the rumored nexus 6 doesn't wow me..

the ONLY reason I'm staunch & stubborn with sticking to this device *being a sprint subscriber* is because TO DATE, it's the only handset that supports all it's current lte bands, & comes unlocked out of the box for domestic use on other carriers (minus Verizon, only cdma roaming); & it's a given to work with international sims, provided the network is compatible, no asking for a sim unlock from sprint, it simply works out of the box..

no other sprint phone can do this..

if it weren't for my contract, I'd be so good to go, sprint works for me but being on contract, & being able to simply swap over to newer sprint plans while on contract has it's dis-advantages.. if I can help it, no more re-newals for me..

By saying you are stubbornly sticking to the nexus 5 makes me think, you are less than pleased with it. Is that the case?

lmao.. no no..

I'm more than pleased with it;

just watch how many will frequently update their handsets, or have several, where I'm the type to do homework on one, & stick to just that one..

I would ride the nexus 5 until the coating wears off the back 5 years from now if it's still ticking strong, holding it own against newer players..

I upgraded to this device, from a nexus s 4g, go figure, lol..

I could have went to a galaxy s 3, galaxy s 4, the moto x, but I stuck with the nexus s 4g, until the nexus 5 came on the scene & wow'd me..

& that's the reason why I stuck with the nexus s 4g for so long; the moto x almost had me; as did the galaxy s 4.. but I didn't bulge..

that's what I mean by being *stubborn*..

1) There have always been two leaks when it came to the next Nexus... the big 6" "Shamu" device... but there was also consistently a 5.2" device that popped up. Test rigs often have different hardware bits, but I doubt that they'd be THAT different. I still think that Google is going to announce two different Nexus devices of similar hardware but different sizes.... 5.2" and 6" and maybe they'll drop that HTC Nexus 9 tablet at the same time in some giant Android L release bash.

2) *shrug*

3) I think I read somewhere that they've already halted production

So if you are thinking about a Nexus device, DON'T!!!!! :) Yes, the Nexus 5 is still a good bit of kit, but no one has really any concrete info on the next lineup of Nexus phones... it is all rumors and speculation. I'd wait for more concrete news/info before pulling the trigger.... I mean, if that 5.2" Nexus does exist, it is going to be an incredible phone.

Just got my Nexus 5 2 weeks ago after selling my L1020, incredible device...stock android is leagues better than my last android device (S3). loving this phone, exceptional at everything it does.

I thought I was ready for a new phone - thinking was that the Nexus 5 is last year's model, but looking around there really isn't anything better. The Sony Z3 compact and the Samsung Alpha both have inferior displays, as does the iPhone 6. Pretty much everything else is huge - I'm so hoping Google doesn't release a 6" monstrosity, or at least if it does, it releases two models, one with a smaller screen.

Quite honestly, the N5 is still right up there with the best. Even the camera is much better than the reviews would have you believe.

Yeah, frankly camera isn't that important to me. My Moto x's camera isn't exactly award winning, but I'm happy with it.

Any current sprint users out there who want to comment on the 5 on the sprint network?

How about voice quality compared to reviews?

It's great for me, have LTE everywhere I go. :)

I just sold my nexus 5 to buy an S5.
I am so disappointed with the S5 camera, it is absolutely terrible indoors, it reminds me of a digital camera from the 90's!

I'm a technician and I regularly take pictures indoors with one hand of machinery parts or of text in manuals, I can't get a single clear pic with the S5! Plus all the pictures come out upside down or sideways when you copy them over to a PC, depending on which way you were holding the phone when you took the picture!!

I miss OIS in the nexus 5 big time. And I miss being able to take pictures with the camera in any orientation and simply transferring them to my PC. I can't believe the S5 has such good reviews when the camera is so bad indoors and file transfer is so 1990!!

I've had the S5 for 2 days now and I'm gonna return it and get another nexus 5, it was my perfect phone and I didn't even know it!

So I definitely recommend the nexus 5

Why do people think Google will release a smaller N6? Every rumor is only for the 6" monstrosity.

Yeah I had a S3 once and vowed I'd never buy samsung again. I hated touchwiz and all the rooting and flashing to get the software i wanted on the phone was frankly just a big PIA and got old. Plus ROMS i liked were also seemingly the buggiest. Thats why i want a clean android out of the box and right now it looks like the only options for that in the foreseeable future is the 2013 X (what I have now) and the nexus 5.

I am a recent adopter of smartphones and currently cutting my teeth on my nephew's old T-M HTC G2. I am tech savvy and have learned the Android OS pretty quickly. One of my other nephews recommended that I wait for the Nexus 6 announcement before purchasing a new phone, but after reading all the Nexus 6 rumors, I went ahead and purchased a Nexus 5. I don't need/want a phone with a 6" display. It is true that the price of the N5 might drop after the N6 announcement, but I decided to get the N5 while it is still available.

Regards...JL

I'm on Sprint and have no problems with the network - data and cellular. I would say the Nexus 5 is still a good phone today than it was when it was released. It's still a great buy and the device will be updated to L, and possibly an update or two beyond, so there's nothing to worry about there.
