Are the apps from Getjar ok to install and are they legal? Like amazon free app of the day?

I'd say yes, but you need to watch out because unlike the Android market or Amazon app store, there are far fewer constraints and checking on tertiary app stores. So someone could repackage fruit ninja(for example) with malicious code and submit it to a 3rd party market.
