Okay I guess things are different here in the US with GSM. In Europe you can get a GSM card anywhere and start talking right away. But not here in the US. How do I get a pay as you go GSM plan without having to get a phone. What are the options? I am really confused.

There are 2 GSM carriers in the US (more in Canada and Mexico). In the US go to either AT&T of T-Mobile and purchase a sim card. If you have a pentaband phone you will be OK, otherwise you need to know what frequencies you are running on as this will determine whether you can use a AT&T or T-Mobile sim.

I can't help but feel ripped off with all the prepaid GSM plans these companies have. Most are ridiculously expensive. 70 dollars a month? Who the hell talks enough to use that much time, other than businessmen and chatty girls.
