Getting Rid of App Icon

I've uninstalled a couple of apps but the icons stayed on my home page. How do I get rid of them?

Long press icon and drag to remove at top of screen.

Tried that, didn't work so I reinstalled the app and tried to uninstall it. Now I've got a black circle icon on my home page where the app icon was. Can move the circle but it won't go away.

When you long press the icon, not only does it allow you to drag it around but also an "X" appears in the upper left corner of the screen. Drag and drop the icon on the X. Job done.

the 'black circle icon' is a folder. to get rid of it, drag two items into it then open (tap on it) and drag them back out.

That's weird. When only one icon is left in a folder, the folder should disappear, leaving only that remaining icon. So you shouldn't have the black circle. What happens if you reboot?

it may have been a glitch. I had accidentally created a folder, then removed those items. later I noticed the "circle" and realized it was a folder. I did try several ways to delete it, don't remember if I rebooted but eventually I put items in and back out.
